When do you start your garden seeds? I can't plant anything out side before May 15th. If even that early. I'm planting things like tomato, peppers, cabbage etc. When should I start my plants?

I would say start now. I started my slicing tomatos middle of February and they went out to the garden yesterday. Right about 8 weeks old and starting to outgrow their containers. Good luck! :)

I think you could have started some of them a month ago. However, many plants, like tomotoes, can be planted late and do fine if your season is long enough and your nights cool off. The peppers I find may be slow to sprout as they have to have warm soil for germination. I built a flat wooden box, lined the bottom with foil, put a heating pad in it, and kept the soil temperature around 70. It worked well. Tomatoes did better too with that method. Not sure what your climate is but cabbage is more of a cool weather plant. I'd consider sets with them.

Your county extension agent probably has a pamphlet that shows this type of information. In Arkansas, they have one that gives a month by month guide on what you should be doing.

Good luck.

You should be fine starting them now. Just remember to harden them before you put them outside. They may not be as big as store bought plants , but as long as they are hardened off properly before they go into the ground they should do fine. I've planted some TINY tomatoe plants before and they do good just a little slower.

In our part of the country, April 1st can be a good time to schedule starting indoor seeds...or even April 15th. I wouldn't worry too much about being late on starting. Get going now and you should be fine.

As for the cabbage, there are some varieties you can plant outside already. Read your seed packet and see what it says about sewing. Key words include "plant as soon as soil can be worked".

Yes, I would start now... in the house under grow lights in some peat moss seed starting dirt and maybe in 3" peat pots. Pretty cheap!

I started most of my seeds the first part of February (live in eastern Kansas, zone 5) and going to plant my 8 inch tall tomatoes tomorrow, YEAAHHHH!! I hope I can sleep tonight ;-) I was a little early but I just had to get my hands dirty! ALSO, I made newspaper pots. Really easy, cheap and you can plant the whole thing when you're ready. See my website, click on gardening on the right side. I also planted in mostly whole eggshells. Heck, I plant in anything that holds dirt and water!

First thing is to find your Last Frost Date, WyoWeed. You'll want "Probability Level 50%" for 32F.

The Weather Service has information on the cities in your state.

Let's say your last frost date is June 2nd. You will probably want to wait 2 weeks after that date to set your tomato plants out in the garden.

So, your set-out date is June 16th. And, you'd like those plants to be 8 weeks old.

8 weeks before June 16th is April 21st . . . tomorrow!!

Steve ;)

Boy I'll be starting late! Been working long hours and let the time get away from me. Well I'll start them on Wednesday and cross my fingers. Well it's a good excuse to build my cold frame over my garden this summer.
Had a killing frost the third week of August last year. Not going to happen again if I have anything to say about it!
Thank you everyone for your good advice. I will most definitely go to your website headred. Sounds like my kind of pots. Cheap and easy!

To be honest... last year around now I planted my out in starter pots (the little plastic ones from the nurseries) and left them on my back porch LOL in the sunlight. They took longer to sprout because I didn't have them in the warmth of my house but they got sunlight. I've done the same this year, but I have them in a mini green house on the back porch so they soak up all the sun all day long and it stays warm inside providing I don't open up the greenhouse... when it gets cooler outside. They were started last week and should sprout probably in a week to a couple weeks. The peppers likely wont survive but thats not the end of the world, I'm okay with buying pepper or tomato plants from the nursery.

Things like your carrots, potatoes, cabbage, lettuces you can plant out now... I planted 3 16 foot rows of various types of carrots just the other day... we've had rain for two days so my timing was pretty fantastic. I'll be planting out 2 16 foot rows of lettuce and one of spinach this week, plus my peas will be going out too.
