I've looked all over the internet and can't find anyplace that ships seed potatoes for fall planting. I'm specifically looking for Yukon Gold, but I would be ok with another, similar potato. Any suggestions?
you could try this site but a lot of their varieties are sold out for the season. they seem to ship what they have year round when you need it if they have it in stock! http://www.potatogarden.com/
Try talking to the folks at the Farmers markets see if they know of any. Being local they might be doing the same thing you are, so you might have some luck that way.
Chickie'smoma - They have 3 varieties still available, so I ordered some called "Agria". They sound good, so we'll see!
Jared - That's a great idea. I can hit the Farmer's market on Friday and see what I find out. I managed to order some, but I want other varieties, too.
Your welcome and I'm glad I can help. I learned that when I first started gardening. I talked with the successful folks to get an idea which varieties did better and what to avoid. Often times too people will share little tricks and techniques to get better produce. Most folks are good honest people and will be more than happy to share their experiences especially when you buy from their stand and tell them how nice their produce is.
The seed potatoes I ordered came today. Can't wait to get these things in their buckets and see what happens. I figure I will probably plant in early August and hope for a harvest in early November? What's the worst that can happen?
you might be able to find the Yukon gold potatoes at the store! i'd say to give it a shot! we tend to have a lot of local potato produces that sell to one of our big grocery stores so most of the brands are local. not always organic though.
The organics haven't been sprayed with sprout inhibitors so that is why I went to the local hippy infested health food store. In fact I did them a favor by intentionally grabbing out the taters that had already developed eyes
