It was a little play on words. We were familiar with HIFIdelity, which was another marketing term but, at least, supposed to have some element of being true to the sounds that were broadcast. Now, there is Wi-Fi. Where do you find it?

I've already said something on TEG about being surprised to find public WiFi both at my wife's MD's office but also in the parking lot - from the building supply outfit across the street!. That's cool - these are businesses and sitting in a waiting room or connecting back to the jobsite make these perks, useful and appreciated.

How about your home? Do you have WiFi? Did you know that internet service providers (Comcast's Xfinity) allow others to tap into the net using your modem? Yeah, just as you decide to post something on TEG or pay that bill, someone stops at the convenience store down the block and clicks onto the internet using the modem in your back room.

Can't happen?! You've got security and a password?! Company would never allow it? Oh, yeah? Comcast uses it as a selling point for their services - your modem for their other customers. Xfinity is Everywhere!.

Comcast says there is a wall between and secure access is secure but is it slowing your access? They say it shouldn't be ...

How about what the guy in the parking lot is doing? Are you ready to share responsibility for that? If he has stolen a credit card and is scoring some loot or he is dealing and his contact is under law enforcement surveillance - you are happy to have him and his evil ways sitting in your living room? He may as well be. It's just as tho he pulled up a chair and began to stink up the place. At least, that is how it seems to me but I'd sure like to be wrong.

Steve, trying to watch for this on the news but a former-xfinity customer

We have a password on our Wi-Fi. So far as I know, Suddenlink (DSL) doesn't farm it out, I hope! We run DH's smartphone on it when he's at home (faster than using network connection) and also an old iPad that the kids use for school.

I'd like to have a TV with built in Wi-Fi someday. I had an HDMI cable connected from the computer's Wi-Fi router to our current TV to be able to play video from online, but I pulled the connector off of the dang thing when I moved the TV stand to vacuum behind it one day. It was a hassle anyway, having to do a split screen to run the computer's output to the TV. Wi-Fi would be so much better! We don't watch much TV, but the couple of shows we do like we generally pick up online at our convenience. We fight over who gets to the computer chair first...the loser has to sit in a rather uncomfy kitchen chair. LOL.

We are on a limited data plan, which allows for very little video watching or game playing. I think we would know if anyone were using our data. They slow us down to a snail's pace if we go over the limit.
I have been thinking about checking into ATT for our TV and computer. I have it on my phone, and have had to use the phone as a hub for the computer a time or two.
Internet security is such a big thing now. It amazes me that we don't have people smart enough to out-think those foreign crooks. How long till they decide to take down our whole infrastructure at once?

Here is what Comcast is doing nationwide and why it is risky for their customers:

ComputerWorld

I'm not savvy enuf to know much about how their modems work but I wouldn't want to try to explain my internet whereabouts and how "it weren't me" if law enforcement comes knocking at my door.

I just read that article and my head is spinning. I don't think Comcast is in this area, unless they go by other names, too. But I have heard they are one of the most hated companies out there.

I kept finding places to access xfinity WiFi and wondering why ?!

Why was it simply called "xfinity?" Why didn't the hotspot seem to be associated with a restaurant, coffee shop, library, church (oh, yeah - there are churches with public wifi).

I thought maybe there was some kind of network through cell towers. It was that common. Maybe it had something to do with business clients. Now, I understand that it has to do with all of their customers' modems. Its kinda like, the home customer gets half the modem and the other half is for the use of passersby ...

It still has a modem address so there is a recording of access. It doesn't say xxxxx½ , or something.
