One of the cull broccoli/cauliflower. Nearly half my height!
Oddly small roots for such huge plants!
Pigs are loving them.

This year I bought my corn already started in packs, but I am afraid I left them without planting for too long. I also had to plant them on a very hot afternoon. They just aren't looking all that good...kind of yellowish. Might have no have corn this year since I think it might be too late to plant seeds....you know, knee high by the 4th of July...the seeds just won't be there.
That is to get it ripe for field corn. Sweet corn, plant through June and into middle of July.

Corn seed is fairly cheap and easy to grow. Starts seem to me to be a waste of money and tiresome to plant individually.

I don't think sweet corn is GMO. They are just hybrids. GMO corn is basically just the field corn, grown by farmers. Don't be afraid to plant sweet corn seed. But you might want to check to make sure it doesn't have a pink powdery coating on it, which is a fungicide and maybe insecticide too. Look for "non-treated seed."

There are GMO sweet corn but unless you have license, you can't purchase. Any treatment on seed will be clearly stated. What is wrong with fungicides to stop seedling problems? Odds of insecticide being on seed are slim and none.

i bought the starts in a nursery because they were non GMO, and I couldn't find non GMO seeds in local stores.
Last year on this site someone posted that GMO seeds could only be purchased by licensed people. Very few crops are actually GMO. Burpee sells all non gmo seeds. Call the company from which your are buying and ask. Truthfully I am more concerned with treated seed. i bought all untreated seed for corn. The supplier said they have poor germination if not treated. I think every corn seed planted has germinated.

What concerns you over fungicides?

Common fallacy is that any seed treatment helps germination. It doesn't. Seed treatments are designed to stop something from killing the plant once it does germinate. So they help on stand establishment and final stands but nothing that I know of helps germination. It's either quality seed or it's not. In corn, some families are notorious for poor germination-Illini Super Sweet.
