Here in NY rattlesnakes are protected. A couple of years ago a father with young childen kept finding rattlesnakes in his yard. A investigation was done by DEP, turns out a large rattlesnake den was near by. The home owner wanted to fence in his yard to protect his children. DEP said no fence it would infer with protected animals home range.Poor guy couldn't fence yard and had to disclose snake den to anyone wanting to buy his house.

In the Sierra Mountains the poising of rivers to kill off the native Brookies [trout] and introduce Cutthroat and others is something I dislike.

The removing of Beaver from the rivers, is justified by saying: All these are descendants of a pair turned loose in the area in the 1940s, is wrong also, in my way of thinking. The beaver have been here from no one knows when.

-----
The introducing of predators is romantic but foolish and harmful.

The black bear is a killer of man and his animals and has been from the time of their meeting. The hiding and covering up of the black bear attacks and killing of people is wrong.

We we want to like bear and we think they're cute, until it happens to us or someone we know.

Wow, that's awful they'd put a stupid snake before a child's safety. :\ I'd be looking to get my hands on some explosives...

I hear rattlesnake is supposed to taste pretty good too... ;)

I'd heard people around here say that the DNR was dropping sacks full of rattlesnakes in the country from a helicopter. I have no idea if it's true or not. Not sure how vital they are to the food chain, but that is one critter I could do without.

Wilderness watch, western watersheds project, friends of the clearwater filed a lawsuit last Thursday in US District Court to stop the use of helicopters by the US Forest Service in Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness . The Elk population in the area has declined by 43% since 2002, so the Forest service wants to find out why and use helicopters ( since mechanical equipment is not allowed to be used in wilderness areas ) to dart then land and fit 60 elk cows and calves with tracking collars then take off again. Tracking will be done remotely. When an stationary signal is found workers in a helicopter would land at the site and determine what caused the death of the elk. These groups say that they are conserned that the Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game is aiming to gather information to justify killing wolves in the area. Bottom line, there are many causes such as starvation, desease, and yes predation by bears, cougars, coyotes killing calves, as well as wolves, etc. . Why are these groups not concerned with the death rate of the elk ??? Next these goups will be all in arms when the elk populations become so low that the wolves will start killing " mustangs" ( feral horses ). thaughts ??? :caf
