    delphinium

I don't stake mine either and they do fine. They are in front of the house and are shielded a bit from the wind by the house. They miss the morning sun but get the afternoon and evening sun and I haven't dealt with any mildew issues. I have had them for about 4 years now and they have spread...

I want some large, easy-care rose bushes- suggestions?

I live in an old farmhouse with a front porch, and I would love to have some large rose bushes in front of the porch railing. I think it would add to the beauty of the house and be so lovely. I don't have much experience with roses, so I need some help. The spot I would plant the roses in...

    Fruit trees from Big Lots

I am posting an update to let you all know that my fruit trees are all doing well. Their leaves have unfurled and they look great. My crabapple tree is not doing so well. I see small buds, but they do not look as if they are getting bigger, and I am afraid it may have died. Is there a...

Are pear trees notoriously late producers, and do they always flower?

Well, guess what? That pear tree has some flowers this year! I cannot believe it. After 5 years it finally blooms. The blooms are few, they are mostly at the top of the tree (which is about 9 feet tall), and a few in the middle of the tree. I wonder if it took a couple of years to recover...

    Asparagus!!!

I just wanted to comment on how neat and gorgeous your garden beds look! I am also enjoying garden asparagus now, and it is so delicious! This it our 3rd year, and the first I have let myself pick any. It was well worth the wait!

Do you have walking paths in your garden? Help me!!!

My garden is rather large, and I have it divided in long rows with walking paths between each row. I like the way I have it set up. The problem I have with it, is it is UGLY. I use cardboard to line the paths and it just looks trashy. I have to use rocks and planting poles to hold it down so...

Are pear trees notoriously late producers, and do they always flower?

I planted 2 pear trees and 2 apple trees 5 springs ago when we moved to our current location. I was a newbie to trees, and I did not protect the trunks. The following winter deer stripped bark from the tree trunks, and two springs later all of the trees were dead except for 1 pear tree. The...

To pinch or not pinch strawberry blossoms..Here's my answer...

Journey, thank you so much for taking the time to write out the proper strawberry protocol! I had everbearing strawberries for the past two years and I wasn't really happy with them- the berries were so small, and I DID pinch the blossoms off the first spring. This year I am going to try some...

    Hello from Ohio!

Hello! I am also in Ohio, in NW Delaware County. I moved here from Columbus though, and I am in still in Columbus quite a bit as my MIL lives in Grandview. Most of my gardening has been done up here and I have noticed that we are a week or two behind Columbus as far as planting and sprouting...

    Fruit trees from Big Lots

I am in the market to buy a few new fruit trees this year. I would like to get a golden delicious apple and also some pear trees. Big Lots has fruit trees super cheap- $14.50 per tree. I have bought trees there before (not fruit trees, ornamental) and they have done really well- as well as...

Let's talk pruning the apple trees!

Thanks everyone! I did do a little pruning last week, so hopefully it will help a little. I was very sad that last year my trees hardly blossomed when my neighbor across the street had beautiful blossoms. I couldn't figure out what happened, I knew it wasn't the weather- hopefully this year...

Let's talk pruning the apple trees!

I have several young apple trees that I should probably prune. I planted them 3 years ago, and last year I hardly had any blossoms and no fruit at all. The first year I did have blossoms and a few apples. Last year could have been a freak year, but I think my trees would be best served if I...

    My Crabapple Trees In Bloom

Those are beautiful! I planted 2 itty-bitty crabapple trees this spring. When I was growing up one of my punishments as a child was picking up crabapples. If I was noisy in church or fought with my sister I had to pick a bucket of crabapples off of the ground

Problem with my fruit trees not flowering

Thanks wailingbanshee and everyone else. I will keep on with the watering this summer and try my hand at pruning this fall (you DO prune in the fall, right?) and see what happens this next coming spring.
