@Bluejay77 Just wanted to let you know I finally got the beans shipped off to you today, hopefully you'll have them by the first of next week. If you don't let me know and I'll try and track them down. Thanks again for all your work with this project, it means a lot!
I've been silent on the forum this year, but I've popped in from time to time to get some inspiration. I had limited space this year and only grew four network varieties. I'm happy to say that I'll be returning seed for all four this year and will be back at it in 2022. The pole limas both...
@Bluejay77, I finally got the seed post sent to you today. Hopefully you'll have it by Monday or Tuesday. If you don't have it by midweek just let me know and I'll track it and see where it's at. Thanks again for all you do in coordinating this project...I'm looking forward to picking my 2021...
These are my network beans for 2020. With a small urban yard, I'm really limited but as I mentioned I should have a near full return on the four I was growing.
Verde Temuco - Not very productive, but this could be a site problem not related to the plant. The area ended up having a bit more...
@Bluejay77 It's been a strange year in my garden but I'm almost ready to get the beans packaged up and shipped. I'm going to have a full return of Warpath, Verde Temecu, Milky Way and a smaller batch of Blue Star Gold. War Path did particularly well and I was happy for this since you said they...
@Bluejay77 I just finished looking at your updated site and it makes me really wish I had more space to grow! Being a city dweller has some serious limits for gardeners. I appreciate all the added details about the network beans - I'm always curious about the origins of the seeds. Thanks...
Its funny. The Munachedda Pale were enormous plants - twice as large as anything else I had. I think they would have topped a 20' pole if there was one. But, very few actual beans. In the end though, it set some pods but nothing like I would have expected based on the vigor of the plants.
@Bluejay77 Everything is good and dry and I'm shipping my bean seeds today; hopefully you'll have the package by the end of the week. This year I managed to get a full return on all of the network beans! My 2020 garden space hasn't been determined yet, but I'll be in touch for next year as...
Today was a pretty good seed day! I'm a small scale, urban gardener so this is bountiful haul for me.
Clockwise from top left:
Cape Sugar 2 (cream color w/ red flecks)
Red Swan (tan with red eye)
Dragon's Tongue (grey with purple flecks)
Nwambili (orange and brown)
Munachedda Pale (cream...
@Bluejay77, I'm hoping for a later frost here too. Not just for the beans but I've got a bunch of tomatoes still needing some time. I didn't taste test the Nwambili but I'm certainly going to grow it again given how well it does here.
It looks like I'm going to manage to get a full return of my five of my network beans this year. The Munacheda Pale FINALLY has some full size pods and I think there's enough time left for them to run their course. The more mature pods on the plant are transitioning to a striped dark red and...
@Bluejay77 This is really fascinating, thanks for sharing. Have you ever compared your collection to this database? I'm just curious how hard it is to match up some of the common names we use to something of this nature. Thanks again!
Do any of you have experience with Red Swan? I'm curious about a couple of things if you do. My plan was to use these fresh - would you suggest that I let them get to the Red stage or would that be too long on the plant? Also, my plants are definitely sending off runners...I thought these...
I can't imagine a time when I'm not fascinated by the intricacies of life in the garden - I love the tiny details. Many years ago my Mother in Law showed up with a bunch of twigs and told me they were hibiscus. In the years since, I've been rewarded with a fence line of beautiful pink and...
Interesting discussion. I'm a bit of a novice with this and just so I'm following correctly, does the "F" in your discussions simply represent the next generation / planting? Also, would conditions ever play into growth habit or is it always dictated by genetics?
@BeanQueen, was inspired by your Red Swan post to get a close up of mine in action. Having too much fun with a new lens at the garden this morning...the symmetry of most vegetable flowers always amazes me. My wife kids me about sometimes growing food crops that we're not going to eat, I always...
