What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Seeded lettuce, kale, and snap peas a week ago. Lots of little baby seedlings out there!

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

Yep, it's me, Steve. I was so frustrated with my garden last year that I took a break from even TEG! The bugs drove me nuts! Anyway, I'm ready to tackle another year of gardening and am excited to be back here with all of the other crazy gardeners! Thanks so much for the replies...

    Home Made Vanilla

I've made my own vanilla for years. I do the vanilla bean/vodka kind, but I keep thinking I'll try the rum kind as well. I don't use mine until it's been soaking for a couple of years. Have to keep several quart jars going at once. . . vanilla is good in everything!

    Dreaded cucumber beetle question.

So, last year's garden got pretty much decimated by hundreds of cucumber beetles (and various other pests). I've done some research and it looks like they will probably come back this year, so after doing some research, here's my plan. After seeding everything this year, I will saturate the...

    Growing Asparagus

Bluebonnet, we started our raised asparagus bed last year with 2/3 organic vegetable potting mix and 1/3 very aged steer manure. Our asparagus is just now starting to come up and it appears to be going like crazy. Apparently it liked that mix. Oh, and we also put bone meal and organic...

There are Lemons & Lemon Cucumbers

Love lemon cucumbers! I've always waited to pick them until they are showing quite a bit of yellow. Maybe I will pick a couple before they get that far for comparison.

What the heck is going on with these berries?

Oh, that's too bad, Vfem. How frustrating for you!

    What to plant right now?

I was considering trying some fall squash, Vfem. This would be a good year to experiment with that. Awe heck, Steve, just call it memory loss and leave it at that. If you get into any more detail than that, you'll just forget what you decided anyway (at least that's what I do)! :barnie...

    What to plant right now?

Our climate/weather here is pretty similar to Auberry, but we do have a funky microclimate because we are situated at the mouth of a canyon. Our fall is indeed very dry, but we are used to watering a lot, so it's no biggie. November 25 sounds about right as a first frost date. Thanks for...

Why do we live clear out here in the middle of nowhere?

I've never been to Indiana. What is your area like, Curly Kate?

What Activities Do You Provide For Your Animals?

Well, let's see - our dogs have appointed themselves the official squirrel chasers, so they entertain themselves with that quite a bit. We have a wading pool just for them and they play in that. We also have a big pool and they love to come swimming with us. Our mastiff mix pup would swim all...

Why do we live clear out here in the middle of nowhere?

The other day we were walking out to our garden, which is situated right behind our Splash pool, when DH noticed an owl sitting on the side of the pool. He was only about 8 feet away. The little fellow flew to the forest of trees about 10 feet away and we proceeded into our garden to do some...

    What to plant right now?

I guess I should look up our first frost date and count backward from there to see when we should plant fall crops here. I think we may stay hotter later than you do up there, Steve. I've never really looked into it because I'm hot and heavy back at school at that time and don't have hardly...

    What to plant right now?

August and September are very hot here, so I'm pretty sure we would have to wait until a little later for asian greens, but I do have seed and want to try them.

    What to plant right now?

We already have pole beans and summer squash going strong. We don't eat okra, so it would be a waste to plant it. We thought about putting some more sweet peppers in, but we can't find anything interesting around here. I could just leave the beds to rest until time to plant the garlic and...
