My idea of the best time to harvest a lemon cucumber:

This is before they begin to look like lemons. To me, by then . . . it's a little late :p.

Is there a flavor difference or just looks different cucumber? And if they taste different what do you use it in or with? Never heard of such a thing.

Those are really wild looking regardless.

One more reason TEG is my favorite site on the net

They are more "tart" than most cucumbers, Jared. I think if you like ranch dressing, that is a good one for the dipping altho' . . . one doesn't have too much choice about using a fork :p.

As they change to yellow, and you can just see the blush starting on them, they just become more seedy. They aren't horrible or anything.

That's a little 5" Beit Alpha type cuke to the right of them. It is good to have these 2 small cucumbers in my garden. The American slicers are nice and I've been missing the looonng Japanese ones the last couple of years. Still, I'm happy :)!

Love lemon cucumbers! I've always waited to pick them until they are showing quite a bit of yellow. Maybe I will pick a couple before they get that far for comparison.

My problem with cucumbers is our usual cool spring. That is one reason for trying some of them set out later, like - the first week of July.

A June will come along when some of the melons die and most everything is set back severely. The year I tried Johnny's Beit Alpha cuke, Diva, had a June like that. I think that was the year when the lemon cukes didn't show up until September.

I have a feeling that if I'd had a late planting of cucumbers that year, they all would have matured their crops at the same time.

I had a horrible year for cukes this year, but I blame the variety. I only grow pickling cukes and this year decided to try Picklebush. Never again. I had a total of nine plants in two hills and only 12 pints of pickles. I should have been overrun by the things. Some of it could have been the weather, but mostly I think it was the variety.
