Same here. You just don't go wandering onto other people's property around here unless you have a good reason.
Figure out the street addresses and write them a letter. Most people who grow things are more than happy to talk about them. :) -Wendy
You know... some of my squash do that each year. I always thought it was because the flower hadn't been pollinated, so the plant decides there's no point in growing the fruit. It happens when they are still quite small, right?

That would be the blossom end, but... you usually hear of BER in tomatoes and peppers, related to calcium uptake. Not sure I've heard of it in winter squash.
Is it happening on the vine, or in storage?

If you read some of Joel Salatin's stuff, he talks about early attempts to raise rabbits on pasture. (In fact those structures were re-purposed as chicken tractors later.)
Apparently the rabbits will dig out of floorless cages and you will spend all your time attempting to re-capture them...
Seed Savers Exchange is asking for memberships and while I've ordered seeds from them in the past, I'm vaguely aware of some controversy that caused the founder to leave.
Here's an article... http://gmo-journal.com/index.php/2012/03/22/controversy-with-the-doomsday-vault/
Any comments? I'm...
This crazy plant is *still* growing new leaves and flowering. If the grasshoppers weren't eating it nearly as fast as it can grow, I bet it would produce until it was killed by frost.
It makes me want to build a huge arbor and let it grow up and over next year. :)
I got a cup of fresh beans...
Copied from the camera to the computer, color corrected, cropped and resized, uploaded and tagged. And that's just with the point-and-shoot, heaven forbid I break out the DSLR!

I finally got some pictures processed.
Day 1 (white) is in the foreground, then it gradually turns light and then darker pink.

I've read that these are very easy to root cuttings from, perhaps I'll try that and plant it in a...
We've been here since early 2010 and the first two summers all the Confederate Rose (which is actually a hibiscus...) did was grow some leaves... no flowers.
This year I noticed some flower buds, and today one finally opened! Of course it promptly poured down rain so I didn't get pictures, but...
They sound like my butterbeans this year! I think we've gotten six pounds shelled plus a quart jar of dried beans to plant next year.
I also wonder if these taste like "regular" green beans? I'm not happy with my Blue Lake bush beans and was planning to switch to Kentucky Wonder (since that's...
To get a taller cake, instead of making two boxes at once in the same pan, consider making two separate cakes and stacking them with frosting in between. Cream cheese frosting, of course!

She finally had the rest -- another six, though one didn't make it. Next time I promise to leave her alone the *entire* day she is due! (Like horses, they can delay labor if they don't feel safe.)
No names. We don't name the food. :)
-Wendy
She only had 2. (It was still very hot when I bred them in August, so the buck may not have been at his best.) I still expected more based on how big she looked! -Wendy
Nothing yet... but when I looked in on her just now I found her lying on her side, and I could see the babies moving under her fur. (Which is creepy and alien-invasion-like.)
This is her first litter so I'm watching to make sure she has them *in* the nest.
-Wendy
She is bred to a Californian buck. I got both of them back in April, but by the time they were old enough to breed, it was insanely hot and I didn't want to risk losing her.
Must be someone else with the FW's. My Californians did come from Florida though. :D
Next up are some commercial...
If all goes as planned we should have babies tomorrow! She is looking decidedly FAT and has been ravenous lately. She did some initial work on her nest and pulled some fur, but then lost interest.

(She is a Californian, just very faded from the hot summer.)...
I have lots and lots of Australian Butter Squash seeds. They need a lot of room or a sturdy trellis, and produce multiple small pumpkin shaped squash per vine. (Well, if the vine borers don't get them...) They taste similar to sweet potato if you bake them. I'm told you can also use them in...
Did you ever get your Jerusalem artichokes? We will be digging ours in the next couple of months (first frost is mid-November) and I'm sure we'll have tons. PM me if you still need some. (Or, if anyone else does, PM as well.) -Wendy
