We've been here since early 2010 and the first two summers all the Confederate Rose (which is actually a hibiscus...) did was grow some leaves... no flowers.

This year I noticed some flower buds, and today one finally opened! Of course it promptly poured down rain so I didn't get pictures, but it looks like it's a ruffly double flower, starting out white and turning pink later in the day.

Does anyone else have one? Here it dies back to the ground over the winter but it seems to come back every year.

I finally got some pictures processed.

Day 1 (white) is in the foreground, then it gradually turns light and then darker pink.

I've read that these are very easy to root cuttings from, perhaps I'll try that and plant it in a better spot (more sun).

I had a hardy hibiscus that would die down in fall and come up from the ground in late spring. I had it in a protected area where it was prone to whiteflies. Couldn't get rid of them no matter how hard I tried. I had moved it there because it invariably got beaten up by a wind storm in its original location. Those big fat stalks are pretty brittle. It would start out the summer with as many as 10 flower stalks, then the wind would break half of them off. I eventually dug it up and gave it to my son. I accidentally broke the root ball in two when digging. He now has two beautiful plants. This one makes huge red single blossoms, about 10 inches across.

Edited to say yours is beautiful. I love the color changes.

Copied from the camera to the computer, color corrected, cropped and resized, uploaded and tagged. And that's just with the point-and-shoot, heaven forbid I break out the DSLR!

That is really a beautiful plant! I never knew they changed color like that... I'd say those blooms were worth waiting for!
