:D I'm excited to finally be able to plant fruit trees at our own place. I'm such a "fruitaholic". I haven't selected any nut trees yet, but we'll see. My family has almonds and olives on the old family ranch. They share if they have extra. I was hoping to also trade excess fruit for produce I...
Many of mine could grow up to 5ft tall. A neighbor at our old place here in the N. Cal valley grows blueberries commercially and I know Duke is one of the types he grows. He has acres of rows that he keeps prunned at 4ft. for ease of picking and cultivation.
edited to add. I'm not sure about...
Thanks, we spent so long looking for a house to buy and we even looked at this place when it was just bare land for sale. About 5 years ago, I remember driving up the long driveway to the top of the hill and the seeing the foundation of this house just getting poured, but we couldn't afford it...
LOL, I got most of my ideas and fruit trees from Dave Wilson and their Backyard Orchard Culture. That's why my many of the trees are planted in groups 6-8 feet apart vs 18-20 feet in a straight row. But, I will have some individual trees that will be "full sized" I also plan on grafting to some...
Update, we're finally getting my fruit trees in the ground :weee So far we have planted 20 trees, but I still have more to go :D
It's hard to see because the trees are dormant, but here are some pictures:) We planted most of them in "groves" or high-density planting: lots of trees in a small...
Great idea. I spend $$$ on the "gel crystals" for plants in hanging baskets. They always seem to dry out in just hours in the summer heat. AND I have lots of diapers, though I don't think I'll use a USED one. :sick
I don't know how it happened but a diaper did end up in on of our burn piles for...
Well, it went from darn near 80 and going all the way down to the teens in matter of weeks. I'm worried about my fruit trees that I still have in pots. Most still have green leaves and haven't "hardened off". Temps will fall briefly below 20f, but will stay around 20 for several hours. The trees...
Don't waste it! Glazes, syrups, dips, etc. Use it on ice-cream! Years ago I had some plum jam that never set. I used it for everything. I even used it for glazing porkchops on the BBQ.

First tomatoes :drool then peppers, green beans, squash, etc. what ever will fit :) I want to build more beds so I can rotate the crops every season to reduce disease. I don't want to plant tomatoes more than one year in the same bed. At my old place, I only had one 4 x 10 bed and planted...
My husband built my my first two raised beds 8'x4' for my veggies next year. They are in an area that gets pretty much full sun and is a southern exposure.
I filled them native soil and mixed in several bags of "store bought" compost. I also added a little bit of brooder box bedding...
I feel for you. LOL, I just planted about 1/4 acre in grass and clover seed for pasture and now the heat wave hits here too. It was 86 yesterday with the wind blowing and hot again today. Now I have to water it by sprinkler 2 or 3 times a day and hope the seedings don't dry out.

I just can't make up my mind on placement. I have somewhat limited areas were we can plant due to leach field, pool and other. Plus, I wanted the trees to blend more into the landscape and not be all in a straight row. I have all the "places" picked out, but I keep switching out trees in my...
I got most from local nurseries, but I also ordered through
http://www.treesofantiquity.com/
and
http://www.davewilson.com/br40/sales_catalog.html
Dave Wilson has a "SOFT" or special order fruit tree program through participating local nurseries. You can pick and choose your rootstocks...
I can't wait until I get some home grown fruit :drool I used to can, jam and dry fruit all the time. But, at the time my old neighbors had a fruit ranch and grew about 20 acres of fruit trees. I can't afford the farmers market fruit prices nowdays for just canning.
I would help my neighbors...
Well I'm still working on collecting my fruit trees and vines for planting this fall through spring. I can't believe how many holes I'm going to have to dig :D Right now behind our carport looks like I'm starting my own nursery
* = trees on order for bare-root in spring.
Apples...
We didn't have as many last year. Maybe only a few pairs. I think that the weird weather patterns we've had could of disturbed their regular migration. Some may have started to migrate too late and now are stuck until the manzanita blooms in late winter.
Or maybe the "word" just got around...
Very pretty male.
Every perch is taken and then they double or even triple up!
There have been dozens of humming birds swarming my feeders lately. They must be still migrating or trying to hold on until the local manzanita blooms.
I have to refill the feeders everyother day :ep
