It sounds like you are looking for meat birds, and I've never gone that route. However, we eat a lot more eggs than we use to, because the fresh, free range eggs are SOOOOOOO much better than storebought. They also have more omega-3s and less cholestral than battery hen eggs. You can have...
We have 6 seedlings each started of:
Poblano
Joe E Parker
Habanero
Pepperoncini
Yellow Wax Pepper
Jalapeno
None of the Aneheims came up, but they are easy enough to find in pony packs.
Wow, Marshall, that's a lot of great help! I'll look into those sites.
I've actually been through Saticoy, Ca a few times.....it's a dusty little farm town that has its share of veggies and fruits, but alas no Saticoy melons. Lots of strawberries!
You know how it is....you're sitting there staring out at a cold, dreary grey day thinking that if you don't see some signs of spring soon, you may need to self-prescribe a trip to southern California. Well, that's how I was feeling a few months ago when hubby brought in the mail, which...
Lilacs for their incredible scent.
Peonies for those amazing bomb-type blossoms.
Angel Face roses for their lavendar-lilac color an again, that amazing scent.
Dandelions, because there they are, with no effort at all.
I absolutely covet the Mexican Flowering Dogwood. Five of the seeds sold on ebay a year or so ago for over $100. It's only native to a couple of fairly remote locations in Mexico.
I have been searching for FOREVER for the Saticoy melon seeds, which used to be the well known cantaloupe in...
A couple weeks ago I gave away all my old flower, veggie and herb seeds from 2010-2011 on craigslist. I stated that they were not fresh seeds, but the woman who got them didn't care, as she just needed anything that might grow, and she didn't have it in the budget to buy anything. I was glad...
We use ours along chainlink with no problems. They don't work quite as thoroughly as the ads show, but they do okay. Plan to hover over the weedy area for longer than advertised.
Sent the link to all of my friends and family who are on the Central Calif Coast. They will send it along to others. Thanks for the link. 30 years in Santa Barbara and 12 years in Paso Robles....I know a lot of organic Californians!
Thanks! And why on earth didn't I think about buying one and trying it for myself. Duh! We have lots of space, so I think I'll plant a hill and see how it goes. If they aren't my cup of tea, I'll pass 'em off to the food bank. ;)
Does it grow well in zone 6b-7a? Is it hard to get it into a spaghetti-like shape? What does it taste like? How many squash can I anticipate per hill?
Thanks, all!
