I don't go in to Walmart very much, so maybe this is old news to all of you, but I found a selection of Seeds of Change seed packets there today. There were maybe 50 varieties of the more common veggies offered in their hermetically sealed ziplock-type of packets. They were all $2 a packet. I...
I used the MEN garden planner to plan out a 40'x70' garden, and found that I had a hard time filling all that space, since I've never canned before and don't want to start with too much. I'm going to go ahead and plant it as planned, though, since there are always the food banks crying out for...
Rebbetzen, it is normal to get fewer eggs in winter unless you provide additional light. Chickens lay eggs based on the amount of light they get. Long summer days=lots of light=nearly daily eggs from most hens! Yum, plenty of eggs for chili rellenos just when the peppers are in season.
Sending good thoughts your way that whatever happens will be a smooth and enjoyable transition. As a displaced Santa Barbaran, I feel your pain at the loss of coastal weather, but we all can adapt to new locations if we look at what is good in each place.
This vine appeared along a barbed wire fence last spring (2010). The plants around it are all sagebrush and tumbleweeds. It gets no water except for what comes naturally, and in this area that's only about 8" a year, mostly in winter. The example is on a piece of 8"x11" paper, to give an idea...
Ahhhh, this was a good experience! Today I got the Henry Field's, "$200 for $20" order, and it is great! I was concerned because the website said the box weighed 2 pounds, but I got 2 boxes, a big one and a 2 pound one.
Today's haul is:
2 Dwarf Burning Bushes The could have been packed...
I just opened the box from Gurneys, and I am very pleased with what I got! The ad stated "$100 worth of plants for $20". In tallying up the value, it looks like they were generous with me. The value is about $110. More importantly, it looks like somebody actually read what I wrote in the...
Hey, it should be just about salad time by now. Any pictures yet?
Hubby and I loved this idea so much that we attached a gutter to a couple of posts that hold up our second story deck. Now we're wondering if radishes, spinach, herbs and such would like it in the gutter-garden.
Okay, so I got the emails that Gurney's and Henry Fields were both closing out for the season, and I could get a grab bag of plants worth $100 for 20 bucks. I figured I couldn't go too far wrong, so I ordered one grab bag. A few days later, the deal was $200 of plants for $20, so I did that...
While not a perfect solution, it seems like dark green or black trash bags placed over the cardboard would look a little better. They are very cheap at the dollar stores.
I love the big, blowsy old-fashioned peonies in shades of pinks and reds. They always look so lush! I also have a weakness for sweet violets, lily of the valley, wild iris, bold and vivid-colored tuberous begonias, climbing English roses, and tiny sweet allysum. Anything that flowers is okay...
Your garden looks terrific as is. For dressing it up, what do you think about painting the wood to match the house? If I did that, I would paint the exterior wood only. Then add 6" trellises to the short ends of a couple of the beds and plant with scarlet runner beans or morning glories...or...
