I planted ever-bearing strawberries in a large pot, last year. They were wonderfully nonstop productive, until frost. The only drawback, it dried quickly in summer. It was late winter when I had them in the greenhouse.

For that, it is best to plan for a heated greenhouse. It is always easy to turn the heat off, if not needed. That said, in mid-February in a sunny afternoon my greenhouse warms up to 70 + degrees without extra heat. At night, everything will freeze without heaters running.

I use my unheated, insulated garage to winter deciduous tender plants. There, the temps normally stay above freezing. Some of my plants stay in the basement for six to seven months. In the greenhouse, I mostly keep plants that can be cajoled in to blooming in winter.

Only one out of 6 plants flowered for me! A grower told me the summers are too short in the northern states for ginger to mature adequately. I imagine your growing season(s) in San Diego should be ideal for ginger.
