Squashes will certainly cross with others of the same species. C. pepo is the most likely to cross, given that there are so many types & they are widely grown... bees will fly for miles to feed on their pollen, so crosses are almost certain unless isolation procedures are used. The acorn squash...
2023 beans cont. In a year with a lot of disappointing results for P. vulgaris beans, I thought I'd end with the two best.
"Tetovac", pole dry. From a seed swap 2006, originally from Serbia. This bean appears to be very closely related to "Tarbais", which I also grow... same DTM, habit, pods...
2023 beans cont...
"Dolloff", pole dry, from an SSE member in Maine 2010. Normally one of my most productive dry beans (nearly 4 pounds last time) but really languished this year. Not sure if it was due to weather or soil fertility, since nothing in that plot did well this year. Like most of...
Both terms are probably synonymous, although I've never thought of shellies as 'sweet'. Maybe demi-sec is an earlier stage of maturity, like edamame soybeans? Shellies are generally harvested fully mature, just before dry down... a stage which only lasts a day or two.
2023 beans cont.
"Chester", pole dry (a.k.a. 'Skunk'). From Will Bonsall 2004. Somewhat wispy runners, but still produces a surprisingly good yield. Was weeded late & surrounded by volunteer tomatillos. I'd really hoped for at least a meal of the delicious shellies from this, but let them all...
Can't find much info on Panther, but it appears to mature between 100-120 days. I have several black soybeans that are earlier, but most are small seeded. "Rouest 13 A1 2" is early, fairly large seeded, and has a decent yield. About 45% protein by dry weight too, higher than most commercial...
I finally got around to weighing & taking photos of the rest of my beans. A disappointing year for the most part; hardly any of the Phaseolus beans performed as well as in years past. All of these beans were grown from transplants, 8 sets of two.
"Blue Blockeye", pole wax. Obtained from a...
According to all of SSE's listings, your spelling is correct. I'm not sure the tiger would care either way. Like many seeds brought here from other countries, that is not its original name anyway. The large beans are stunning in appearance, and very good in shelly stage.
That would probably be some of the lesser-known members of the gourd family; bitter melon (as in my avatar). tromboncino squash, luffa, gherkins (the real gherkins, not small cucumbers) and cucuzzi gourd. I love chayote squash too, but can't grow it this far North. I've actually considered...
@Bluejay77 , if I remember the list you once gave correctly, I was interested in one of those UC Davis varieties. All bush, if my memory is correct... was one of them Tiger Eye? I once grew that bean & loved it, but ended up dropping it partially because of its low productivity. Could you please...
I added both soil sulfur and gypsum to my home gardens in the Fall of 2021, along with wood ashes, charcoal, and lots of shredded leaves. Those gardens were very depleted after 20 years of use; yet after that treatment, the results in 2022 were phenomenal. Last Fall, I added some wood ashes & A...
Me too!!! I miss olive loaf. And ate a lot of braunschweiger sandwiches too, something I've since lost my taste for.
My father raised dogs, so had a bin of dry dog food in the kitchen, to mix with cooked-down scraps from the local butcher. I was about 5-6 YO at the time, and would snack on that...
Welcome from the "Frozen Tundra!" (with apologies to @Alasgun , who is from the REAL tundra). I lived & gardened in Cali for 16 years; but always in the more moderate climates of San Jose & San Diego. Your inland climates are much more challenging; I only got to taste that when the Santa Anna...
Because my home gardens & rural garden are 6 miles apart, I can grow 2 runner beans & 2 limas for seed without crossing.
Lima "Berrier's #2", pole. Beautiful mid-sized seeds, and very productive. Harvested over 5 pounds of dry seed, and froze or gave away about half the crop in shelly stage...
Runner bean "Tarahumara Tekomari". Did pretty well this year, the late freeze improved the yield. 24 ounces of seed, and a lot of shellies. I've been selecting the lima-like gray seeds from the original multi-colored land race. This is the 3rd generation, the recessive white flower & seed has...
