Thanks for the info, catjac. There won't be a next time for transplanting. I had to get these out of the front bed first, as the management is putting rocks in. They would have been killed had I not taken the plants out now. Mulch is a very good idea. Thank you. What kind of mulch?
It's in a huge pot, so I don't think it could be rootbound, but it's a good idea. I am afraid to disturb its taproot, however. The experts say it hates being disturbed/transplanted.
The bright yellow Missouri Evening Primrose is different from the pink Evening Primroses. I transplanted tons of the pink types, and they are doing fine. They didn't sulk in their new location for even one second.
Thanks, so lucky. No, it's not next to a mole run or varmint hole, I don't think. One or two do wilt more severely than the others. I have about 15 clumps. They are not as close together as they were in the other garden. You may be right about air pockets.
Thank you for your reply, so lucky. Here is what they look like in all seasons: https://conservationgardenpark.org/plants/47/missouri-evening-primrose/
I transplanted a Missouri Primrose plant in mid-April. It had bloomed beautifully in its previous location for several years. Last spring I transplanted a small bit of it to another location and it bloomed very nicely and then disappeared and did not return. This, however, is the Mother Plant...
Could the plant have gotten too dry? I don't recall having to water it much this early in the season in prior years, though it has been warmer here earlier this year than in past years.
My sea holly is in a large pot and has bloomed beautifully the past several years, probably at least 5 years? How long does sea holly live? Yesterday I was shocked to notice it looked very bad, wilty. Some of the leaves were totally dried up. A leaf at the base looks fine, but the main stalk...
It's the leaves of the coneflower plants, the whole plants, that wilt, not just the buds. I wasn't clear in my post. The leaves get so droopy. Are the roots not pushed out into the surrounding soil? I'm thinking maybe the roots stayed in the rootball and did not reach out into the surrounding...
I transplanted several coneflower plants in mid-April. Some have set on buds, but every other day they tend to wilt badly, and some wilt every day? What would cause this? Watering revives them, but I'm wondering whether there is a root system problem that will cause them to die when it gets...
I'm hoping more will spring up. I planted some on the Kitten's Grave, way out back. I will walk out there and see whether any have resurrected there, too.
I accidentally knocked a sprout off my dahlia I was getting ready to plant outside. The sprout is about 1" long. I put it in a sealed Ziploc baggie with very wet soil, and under a fluorescent light for 24 hours a day, and it's looking good. When it puts out plenty of roots, supposedly by the...
I agree with you, so lucky. I was going to tell my friend who suggested the Miracle Gro this, but she seems sure diluted Miracle-Gro won't hurt a plant. But I think I'll go with my feeling that it doesn't need fertilizer. I did put some Miracle Gro potting soil in the ground, mixed with the...
Great story, Steve! This plant is tiny, though almost 10 years old. How would I take root cuttings of it? Do I just remove parts of the plant and put them in a baggie with soil? I am trying this with a dahlia sprout I broke off, accidentally, and it is greening right up.
Thanks, so lucky! Does anyone else have any advice? Should I water the transplanted lavenders with diluted blue Miracle-Gro? Would that help invigorate them with new growth??
That is so romantic, that it was your grandmother's, NyBoy. Thanks for telling me that. I'll send photos when it blooms. I'll bet your grandmother brought it to life from Heaven for me. It took a little Divine Intervention, but there it is!
