That's weird. Muscovies are the only waterfowl I raise but when it snows the chickens stay in the coop - the turkeys and muscovies get out and play in the snow.
I've noticed the grass is starting to get green under the brown - real close to the ground. My poultry flock is responding by spending a LOT more time out free-ranging and pecking at the ground, versus just standing around hating the snow.
Oh, we're done with the cardboard for now - it has served its purpose. The problem with thinner cardboard is….it comes in much smaller sizes. And this is a large garden area. And it gets very windy here. I did initially try using thinner cardboard but the wind just picked it up and carried...
Great thread - I learned a lot too! I have never saved seeds in the past but after reading a blog post a few days ago, I was thinking this year I might try to save seeds. In the blog post, the blogger saves seeds from every single veggie she cuts up. After cooking and eating, if it was a...
It wasn't possible with this cardboard to just leave it in place as it wasn't your typical cardboard box flattened out. It came from commercial duty cardboard cartons - each designed to hold a LOT of weight. The cartons flattened out were about 6x8 (feet) and I originally said were the...
On a previous thread, I discussed my use of VERY thick cardboard last year to try to kill the weeds in my new garden patch. This thread is an update….
On Sunday DH and I pulled up the cardboard, so that we can get the tiller in. Underneath we found that in places it seemed to have worked but...
Thanks for that Journey. I plan to get up to the extension office to get my soil tested so I think I'll wait to spread the ashes until I get the results from the soil testing.
We have a small fireplace that we only use occasionally. I.e., it creates ambience more than heat. Yesterday I cleaned it out and have a bucket of ashes. I figured there has to be a use for them somewhere around here so I googled it and found a list of "10 ways to use ashes…." Most of them...
You got it! Except what I did was go to the dollar store and buy a few packs of micro-fiber clothes. (All my cut up clothing items are in use as cleaning rags.) The microfiber cloths are about the size of a washcloth and came in packs of 2 or 3 for $1. I keep those in the bathroom, use one...
I thought it was best to keep all seeds in the refrigerator all the time, for longevity so that's what I've always done. I've had pretty good crops from seeds that were 8-10 years old :hide
:yuckyuck
Too much nitrogen can cause green, leafy growth with no fruit. I found that out the hard way one year with tomatoes. I used the bedding from my chicken coop, dug into the garden bed and then planted tomatoes. The plants grew 7' tall and were very bushy with vigorous green growth...
Nifty, as I said on another thread, I really like a lot of the features of the new platform. How should we report posts now though? On BYC, there is a report button but I'm not seeing that here. I've seen several posts lately that are clearly spammers and wasn't sure how to go about reporting...
Yikes! One more reason I'm glad we don't keep our pets in the house. Used to but when we moved to the new place, all pets became outdoor animals. They're happier and I've yet to find a downside. (Well, ok, when I spill something in the kitchen now *I* have to clean it up.)
The first year I decided to do a garden, it was the beginning of July before the thought occurred to me! So on July 3rd I went out and bought a few pepper, tomatillo and tomato seedlings along with a few herbs, and planted them in my front flower bed. A few days later we had a hail storm with...
