I ventured into ornamentals last weekend at the spring garden show. Now I've got a wee Brug in a pot on my porch. Slightly shaded but mostly sunny from 1:pm on, in some organic pre-fertilized potting soil (orange bag... Can't remember the name).
I watered well on planting on Sunday. It was...
I've got a big ol' bag of DE in the basement. Need to get it out to treat for fleas in the side yard, too. Will dump some on the ants and see.
Problem is.... I don't mind the ants until they bite me. I rather value their predation of termites.
I wish I could encourage them to move...
I tried the Witch's suggestion yesterday, as the Tomato Ants hadn't moved out despite being tossed 3 times now. But I found the Nursery, I think, and tore that apart (was a weakness/patch in my "raised bed" 2x12), so maybe between that and tossing in a shovelful of the Compost Pile Ants...
I set out the rest of the tomatoes. The last one was slated for installation at one end of a raised bed, which has lately been a huge fire ant community. That was a bit of a trick...
I tossed the whole pile, to rile everyone up and start the planting hole... and maybe encourage them to move...
Japan is apparently the foremost educator of Chicken Sexers. :)

I put several planters of potatoes together a few weeks ago. Planted on top of 2/3 planter full of soil, and planned to hill to the top and beyond. Had been burying the sprouts as soon as they were visible, until....
It rained a few days ago for the first time in months. I started setting...
Hatcheries vent-sex chicks.
Bantam or small breeds have proportionally smaller vents and are more difficult to accurately sex. So for the purposes of a 10% max error guarantee, they won't necessarily sell sexed bantams.
I think. :) I might be making all that up tho, because I know I've...
My best friend just started a raised veggie garden this year. She's not asking much in the way of questions yet, but she will be. She's very proud of her box of dirt, and the wee plants she's got coming up from seed. I think she's going to have problems soon though. Or maybe not... she has...
They'd darn well better.... ::grumble::
I'm excited about the Paul Robesons also. All the catalog descriptions I've read have been enticing, as is the percentage of individual suppliers who list it in their top 10 when they're selling nigh unto a hundred (or more) different varieties. I...
I grew up in Eugene, OR, and my grandparents (the ones with the original Thompson's Seedless grapes :) ) would summer in Winchester Bay.
On days we weren't fishing (or crabbing, or digging clams), we might go berry picking.
Or, when I was at home, I'd go out back and pick from / hack away...
Holy Cow!
I've never seen anything packaged like this.
Great Big Box with lots of little boxes inside
Each plant (4" pot) in its own box ...
... in a bag ...
... with a "lid" ... (these were the most useful part of the packaging)
... with some bubblewrap ...
8 plants, no...
Mmmmm Marionberries.
I want Marionberries and Boysenberries. Maybe Tayberries. I'll be nice and plant them along the neighbor's concrete shed slab, so they don't invade his yard. ;)

Are there any natural herb shops in your area, or homeopathic practitioners? Herbalists?
Some Herbalists will...
I've been buying my seeds online also. Much cheaper than buying plants online. :) But all the varieties are there, and available from Seed Savers or Baker Creek or Sample Seeds or whoever. And I feel like, with a website, there's more information about the provider available. Or they're...
Yep... it's a double shotgun. Or, as I suppose the rest of y'all might call it, a duplex. The footprint is approx. 25' x 100'. So all my rooms (12' wide) are on the left side, and my tenant has all the rooms on the right side. Front porch, room, room, room, little-hall-and-bathroom, room...
I LOVE Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps (never tried the bars, don't know how they last). Lavender, Almond, Peppermint (cool and tingly in the summertime! Essential for New Orleans.) It's a bit pricey, but super-concentrated and lasts forever.
I wanted heirlooms so I can save seed this time, and I wanted Non-Monsanto. Organic. I felt like Laurel's was a more controlled situation.
Our spring garden show is this weekend... I probably should have waited for that. I do have 2 cages left, and if there's something intriguing...
Well, I wasn't exactly complaining, just describing my situation. :)
It's been a pain in the arse, no lie, but my house looks great and is almost finished. I'll start more seeds for fall as soon as the guys are done.
The grant is a State and Federal funded program to "Preserve the Historic...
Finally. It'll be 70*F today, and I've been getting antsy.
I started seeds last year, got all the varieties I wanted, and everything did great. This year I started seeds even earlier, after bodging together a plastic-shelf-greenhouse to go on my back porch in the sun.
Well, the greenhouse...
