Are they annuals? Because the one I had from last year didn't come back this year :(

Cheap canning equipment that's not really official equipment.

I learned the hard way that a good canner is a 'tamale' pot - because it's taller than the regular canner that they sell.

Question about canning- bringing water to a boil

I didn't realise you could can a 1/2 jar of something...because of the headspace requirement. I'm a new canner and am still trying to figure out everything!

the continuing adventures of a newbie canner

Gonna try DILL pickles today - got a peck of un-pickled cukes at roadside stand just now. NOT going to use the Ball mix (oh no no no - can you tell I'm very anti-that stuff!? heheee) but have a few recipes and will whittle down the selection to one. I'll post a photo when I'm done! And again...

    skunks

Thanks OCF. I don't see any on our property, but I'll grab my DH and we'll do a thorough check-up this weekend. I really don't want to pay for a wild animal inspector /trapper person to come out if we have none on the property, you know?

    skunks

hehee, yeah, but I live VERY close to my neighbors, so the skunks could be living at their place.

how long do things last in the fridge?

I opened a jar of pickles that I canned a few weeks ago. Yummy! Now, how long do I have to eat them all up? Same with the jam I made. Since there's no preservatives in them, I'm assuming I cannot leave them in there for a long time. Another reason (I believe) I'll need to can in 1/2 pints...

    Anybody have a canning block/deficiency?

you should try continental/german-style knitting - if you're a crocheter, this style may work easier for you - it did for me...I couldn't knit a stitch doing the 'american/english' way, but doing the continental way, it just clicked. Here's a great site so you can see how to do it...

the continuing adventures of a newbie canner

Thanks Laura!! I had been so discouraged, thinking I really messed up with the pickles. :bouquet When I wiped off one of the jam jars, the lid went "clipop" and sealed so I freaked that I sealed it by force, and had to make sure I didn't mess things up.

the continuing adventures of a newbie canner

So firstly, here's a photo of the b&b pickles I made from the Ball package last week (which, btw, I gave away all the rest of my Ball pickle mix, because I still find the directions irritating and confusing.) As you can see, I didn't pack enough in, as they're all floating. I haven't tried...
