Someone gave me some quince today. I saw a LIVE worm in one of them!! :o
How do you keep worms out of fruit, anyway? And is it OK to use the fruit where the worm hasn't been? I mean, with the quince the worm left an obvious trail. But if you wanted to make jelly, could you cut around it? Would...
ohhh. Yeah, that is what I meant. I guess I got the invasive ones confused. They are fairly taking over the state of Mississippi.
I have had pretty good luck getting rid of them by pulling them out by the roots. My dad & I pulled up some that was growing right next to my apartment one time. The...
Looks like Japanese privet to me. They can be pretty if controlled, but I think they are considered non-native, invasive. But they will sure enough make such a thick hedge you can't get through them.

I have goldenrods. I would swear some of them are ten feet tall. Like towering goldenrods!
They used to grow all over our pasture, but we've been mowing it this year. Now they are only growing along the fence. Is just pulling them up going to get rid of them?
I do hope to plant some things...
I was also reading that fruit trees (I assume ornamental ones included) will sometimes bloom out of season after being stressed. Then it may take them a couple of seasons to get back to normal. Since they were both seriously stressed after hurrican katrina, maybe they are just trying to get back...
Maybe so, PC. I am trying to imagine what my old bradford looked like ten years ago. It is so much thinner (sparcer) than this bushy guy but back in its day--maybe so.
I emailed the pictures to our extension office to see if any of them have an idea. :D
I will post back if I get a response...
It does look pearish, doesn't it! Those blossoms even look like pear blossoms. I am almost certain it's not bradford. I have a bradford pear in the front yart. The leaf shape is very close. But the bradford has a few feet of trunk on the bottom that don't have branches or leaves.
This tree...
No idea what kind of tree this is. Was on the property when we bought it. When I first saw it, it was about this time of year (two years ago) and I kind of wondered if it was a fruit tree. But it never gave any indication.
There is another one of these that was totally blown down by hurricane...
I have what I am sure is a maple tree of some kind growing near my house (too near, but it was there when I bought the place.)
I don't know what kind it is.
But, anyway, I want maple syrup. And I have read that you can get syrup from different kinds of maple trees, but sugar maples make the...
I know you meant storing fresh apples, so I'd like to veer slightly off-topic if I may. I mainly wanted to add, don't forget why there's such a thing as canning in the first place. :) It's so we can keep things to tide us over during the time for the year when the food is not available fresh...
Must be. I was just thinking about this again today because we have been keeping the area mown down and there was hardly any of it this year... like it's just dying out.
Cassandra (it looked so pretty growing up around the bluebird house)
Could be. It is like my worst nightmare to spill a pot of boiling water on me. One time (when our hot water heater was out for a few days) my aunt Susan (when she was a young teen) was carrying a pot (like a canner size pot) of hot water off the stove to the bathroom and she spilled it on her...
Mine had a big mean warning lable on the side that had a picture of my canner sitting on the top of a turkey fryer burner, in a red circle with a line drawn through it.
It didn't say why and I wonder (all the time!) what's the problem.
I dunno...

Wow. Thanks for all the good info.
I am not sure what kind I am getting either. I am trading with a local lady. (Fresh eggs for strawberry plants!) :)
Kwynn, can you tell me a little about the maintenance of strawberry plants?
If I understand correctly, you are supposed to pinch all the...
Chickenboy, are you making any progress with your strawberry plants? I'm supposed to pick up some transplants in a few days. I think I am going to try doing the growing in a bag of soil thing. :)

Hey, here is the link to the other one I was talking about. It may help someone else who is interested in growing fruit trees in limited space.
