I have what I am sure is a maple tree of some kind growing near my house (too near, but it was there when I bought the place.)
I don't know what kind it is.
But, anyway, I want maple syrup. And I have read that you can get syrup from different kinds of maple trees, but sugar maples make the best syrup.
How do I know if I have a syrupy tree before I go out and buy a bunch of equipment? Would you just drill a hole in and see what comes out?
This tree is huge. It's probably more than 2' in diameter. It is in a very bad place and has dropped some limbs and suffered more than one amputation to keep it from damaging the house. But it is in a corner between porch and two different rows of fence that makes it very tough to cut down. So... as you can imagine, the poor thing is very ugly from all its rough treatment. But it does look healthy.
If I can't get syrup out of it, I have decided that I am going to further operate on it... keep trimming it until it is small enough to cut down.
Oh dear. I'm way OT. How do I find out if I can get syrup out of this tree?
