    Crystal Pickles

My bosses wife, Nancy, sent me some canning jars and a recipe this morning. It is a cherished recipe to her because it was one her late mother used. I have seen reference to the recipe on the internet before, so I don't think it is necessarily obscure. But I wanted to share it anyway, because...

Does anyone have a blackberry Jam recipe they dont mind sharing?

Jelly is the stuff with no fruit in it. It's made exclusively from the juice. Jam has little bits of fruit in it and "preserves" are big chunks of fruit! Just for comparison: Think "grape" generally when you think jelly and "strawberry" generally when you think jam. Those are basically...

Does anyone have a blackberry Jam recipe they dont mind sharing?

That's what I was gonna say. Recipe on the box. I ended up making jelly because I don't like the seeds, but I believe the jam works just like the jelly, except you leave some of the fruits in. The recipe on the box of pectin is a great one. Cassandra

Can we talk about pressure canning?

omg Cheezy poofs are making people sick now? I hadn't heard that. That's what I get for not having tv. I avoid all the junk, but I miss some of the important stuff, too. :) I am shopping around for a pressure canner. Been looking at ebay. I saw a 4 quart one at Fred's for $20 and that might be...

Can we talk about pressure canning?

I have never pressure canned anything before. And every time I hear someone mention canning beans or squash (and the like) I cringe and think BOTULISM! :o I realize people do this all the time. I have been researching pressure canning and pressure canners. What I have read scares me even more...

The Evergreen Tomato Plants (LOL) PICS

At last! A a couple of them are starting to turn. I will try to take some pics when I get home this evening. I don't know what kind of Roma that is. But they aren't an orange or yellow variety, I don't think. I'm sure it will turn very red if I leave it on long enough. I looked for the little...

Hey, what is that kind of grass...

Thank you for that, too, beefy. It does seem to be pretty sturdy. We drive over it occassionally when we need to and it bounces back real well. I did some research on it when I found the name and it says it is commonly fodder. My guinea pigs love it. When it is tall, I tear off a few stems and...

    The Salt Cured Basil Experiment

John's my husband. He pokes good natures fun at my "honey homemaker" antics, but he appreciates it. I forgot to add that you are supposed to store the basil in the refrigerator. That is where mine is. Way back on a far shelf where I will forget about it. It is supposed to keep for months that...

Cherry! That is so awesome!! I know how you feel. I bought a house (not in the family) but I keep finding these trees that I have always thought (man, I wish I had that tree in my yard.) It's SO cool to find them! Cassandra

The Evergreen Tomato Plants (LOL) PICS

Thanks, OCF. Glad photobucket stopped being a butthole. LOL I think those beefsteaks MAY be Brandywine. Does that sound right? I remember I really wanted some because I like the name. I also got celebrity and early girl. And a boy's name with a B (either bradly or bradford) I could swear I...

    Drying Herbs

I have done that once or twice but I haven't learned to do it right (yet!) When I take the herbs out, they literally crumble and fly away. LOL Hrm... maybe I am leaving them too long. :th Cassandra

The Evergreen Tomato Plants (LOL) PICS

(whine) I knooowwwww I need to prune them, big time. I'd been trying to do some each weekend, but had a fit of laziness last weekend and didn't do it. (SO I will have double the work THIS weekend.) LOL They will probably start to turn in a couple of weeks, it sounds like. I will keep posted. :)...

    How is the weather?

It was 88 degrees yesterday and that felt like a relief! It's been so hot here you don't want to go outside. I've been doing my gardening in the evenings after work and had to get a hat with a terry-cloth sweatband in it so I could see. I expect we'll be getting a lot more of the same. Cassandra

    The Salt Cured Basil Experiment

I decided I had to give it a try after reading about it. John says this picture makes our kitchen look way nicer than in real life! :) Layer of salt on the bottom of the bowl. Alternate single layers of leaves with more salt. John thought the bowl was huge and wondered what I was doing...

HELP! The rabbits are eating my garden...

Am I gonna make myself sound stupid asking this? Would playing a radio on talk radio all night scare them away? (out there close by where they could hear it, obviously) Cassandra
