I thought to post some pictures of my non-riping tomatoes. From looking through the posts here, I think it has been close to a month since I had some good sized tomatoes on the plants. But my sister just called me last night to ask why her tomatoes weren't getting ripe! And my mom's aren't ripe yet, either. I think we are just being impatient and it isn't time. Here are some pics of my plants.

Tomatoes won't ripen if it is very cold or very hot. The best temps for tomatoes to ripen are between 68-77 degress. If it reaches above 85 tomatoes will not ripen at all. If they are actually full size and you don't want them to rot on the vine before they ripen, you can cut them from the vine, place them in a shoe box with a ripe tomato and put them in a cool dark place. They will begin to ripen.

Either way. Like I said, the weather might be the problem for the tomatoes not ripening.

I see them too! They are really pretty..... and green!

I say give them time, it seems mine stayed green forever too and then when one started to ripen, they all did! I'm serious. I think size wise they didn't change for weeks (maybe even a month) before they turned ripe.

Oakland, if tomatoes didn't turn ripe over 85 here in Texas we wouldn't have any! We are having 100 degree days and mine are turning okay. Maybe that is just a location thing. Here they thrive as long as they get plenty of water before the heat of the day.

I should add that tomatoes will ripen over 85 if night time temps drop below that.

I'm glad we do go below 85 at night. I would hate for it to be that darn hot at night too! I can understand the poor tomatoes not ripening if it was that hot at night, poor things would just be cooking on the vine. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with humidity levels and such when I said maybe it was location- we are really humid here.

Wow, we have close to two months of nights in the upper 80's, low 90's and I still get tomatoes, but we have very high humidity which is supposed to be good for tomato production.

Random thoughts:

It is true though that hot weather delays ripening just like posted above.

Some larger tomatoes can stay green for 40-50 days before breaking into color. Once one goes, they all go b/c of ethylene gas production.

Cut back some foliage or "top" your plants so that more energy goes to the fruit and not the leaves.

(whine) I knooowwwww I need to prune them, big time. I'd been trying to do some each weekend, but had a fit of laziness last weekend and didn't do it. (SO I will have double the work THIS weekend.) LOL

They will probably start to turn in a couple of weeks, it sounds like. I will keep posted.

Tomatos seem to ripen in a brown bag ok. Fried green tomatos are awesome too.
