I'm in a burb of the Twin Cities, and I'm having the same trouble with my tomato plants.
It was recommended to me to do two things: 1) hang 'ripe' banana peels ON the tomato cages or 2) put green tomatoes in a brown-paper bag along with a few 'ripe' banana peels and close up bag.
The ripe...
Everyone knows how petunias get very 'leggy' as the season goes on.
Well, I had read about cutting back the 'leggy' stems as much as 2/3 which I did, and it WORKED. They came back just BEAUTIFUL.
I mentioned to a fellow gardener (who is 72 years old and gardening for 30+ years on a UK gardening site) that I have tons of tomatoes on my plants, but they aren't turning red.
He said to hang 'ripe' banana peels on the cages, and the peels will give off ethilene gas to ripen the tomatoes...
I also have grown carrots in the past with no problem; but this year, I mixed in bags of 'organic cow manure' into the soil of this particular bed, that I had picked up at Lowe's, and it must have been B A D stuff. Not only did my carrots not come up, but 'weeds' didn't come up either...
Last year, Reynolds came out with their Handi-Vac Sealer and vacuum-sealer/freezer bags which I bought for putting up my produce and were readily available at BOTH Wal-Mart and Target.
Well, THIS year, those Reynold's vacuum-freezer bags are NO WHERE TO BE FOUND at eitherWal-Mart or Target...
After reading this thread and seeing the picture of the potato seed pod, I did some research.
It said if you're lucky enough to get these, dry them on a sunny windowsill until they're black. Cut them open; scrape seeds out onto a paper towel; let them throughly dry; and, put in an envelope...
OH yes, I've been reading all the horror stories with bore viner.
I've never been a big fan of growing winter squash although I am growing two plants of Waltham butternut this year (free seeds from Wintersown.)
I've been reading how winter squash are such excellent storage keepers and was...
It seems that every ad I read for a water bath canner says, "Not recommended for smooth top stoves."
Well, if a person has a smooth top stove, WHAT are they supposed to use?
I used to grow bush beans in the past; but, it got to be too much back-breaking work to pick them. Plus, bush beans take up a lot of space in my suburban garden.
This year, I broke down and built a 60 ft. trellis, using that nylon trellis netting that I purchased through a seed catalog. to...
Over in the 'Diseases & Pests' category I posted the article w/link and pictures regardeing late blight which is the potato famine fungus that has been found in NY.
According the article, the disease came to the area because a vegetable wholesaler apparently sold an unnamed major box store...

The plant fungus that caused the Potato Famine in the 1840's has shown up in Plattsburgh, and experts say residents need to act quickly.
It's called "late blight" and it affects eggplants, potatoes and tomatoes. The fungus hasn't made it this...
My mother who lives in Colo Spgs. told me how much rain she has gotten lately. I believe that I speak for ALL of our fellow gardeners that our hearts are breaking for you; and, the fact, that it could happen to any one of us, around the country, too!!
I'm in MN, and we keep PRAYING for rain...
I have had problems in the past with powdery mildew on the leaves of my cucumber plants. I have since read in many sources that one of the reasons this happens is from 'water' on the leaves. So, this year, I am being VERY diligent and watering each cucumber plant, by hand, and ONLY on the soil...
CATALINA:
I'm in a burb north of Minneapolis, Zone 4b, and I 'start' the cucumber seeds mid April and wait to put the cucumber plants IN the ground the first week of June.
