    Preserving Cukes?

Is there anything I can do with cucumbers, besides pickles? I have an abundance of them and we don't eat pickles (or use relish). Is there any way to save them? We're sick of salads!!!

    Overrun With Cukes!

I got a bit carried away with my cucumbers this year and have WAY more than I can use. Does anyone have any recipes that uses LOTS of cukes? These are a table variety, so I don't think pickling is an option.

    What should every garden have?

I vote for zucchini as a confidence booster to newbies! You'll get loads! :) My vote is for tomatoes, sweet peppers and some type of leaf lettuce. Good luck and have fun!!!

    Is Vine Ripening Better?

I have loads of tomatoes that are pulling my plants down (even though they're supported). I've been taking the tomatoes that are just starting to turn red and letting them ripen indoors so that there wouldn't be as much weight on the plant. I hear so much about about vine-ripened fruit and...

    Eggplant leaves turning white

I planted eggplant 4 days ago and the leaves are turning white. They are turning white from the vein in the middle of the leave outward. After they turn there looks like there are small holes developing. What is this? It's not affecting any of the other veggies (peas, sweet peppers, 2 varieties...

    Ground cover weeds

Okay, here are the pics (This is so embarrassing!). I spent the better part of the day pulling these blasted things up from around the plants. These pictures are the worst spots, but I definitely don't want to deal with this again. Now I need to figure out a suitable mulch. Any Ideas?

    Pictorial Weed ID Guide

Would it be possible to have a "sticky" at the top of the "Weeds" forum with pictures that identify different types of weeds (and maybe what to do about them)? Thanks!

    Ground cover weeds

Last year was my first year with a veggie garden. I used newspaper as mulch and it worked pretty well. This year, between rain, work and laziness (I admit it) I didn't put any type of mulch down. I have weeds that I can only describe as "ground cover". What are they? What is the best way to deal...

    Special recipes for heirlooms???

I was going through the Bakers Creek catalog and there are sooo many different varieties of so many veggies! Some of them I've never even heard of! Are there special ways of preparing these heirloom varieties or can I use them in any standard recipe for that vegetable type? I'd love to try some...

Can I use these other varieties in any eggplant recipe or are there certain ways to prepare them?

How big should tomato plants be?

I've read on here that tomatos should be planted with the ground level just above where the first leaves have been removed. How tall should the plants be above the first leaves before I put them in the ground? Or does it just depend on the weather? Thanks!

    Trellis Ideas

Last year I used two stakes with twine strung 6" apart for my pea trellis. It worked "okay" but I'd like to try something a little more sturdy this year. What do you all use?

    Really strange seedling!

I have a tomato seedling that has sprouted. At the top where the leaves should be it looks like the seed is there instead. Anyone ever see this? Will the seed fall off and expose leaves? :idunno

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

Last week I started my tomato, pepper and eggplant seeds indoors. The tomatos are sprouting! I can't wait until I can get something out in the garden!

    Tray for seed mat

Thanks to all! Yummm.... Cake sounds good! Now I have a justifiable reason to buy one! The main concern I had was if I would be causing any type of electrical hazard by using something other than a seed tray. I saw the jiffy tray inserts and was going to go with them if I didn't find...

    Tray for seed mat

I bought an electric seed mat and cannot find a seed tray without cells (I'd like a flat surface). Would a disposable aluminum baking tray like the ones you buy in the supermarkets be okay to place on top of the mat? The warnings on the mat say not to put anything that does not conduct heat on...
