I dice it into bite sized chunks, cook it til barely tender and serve it with a french vinagrette (oil, lemon juice or vinegar, powdered mustard, salt and pepper) You can let it marinade in the vinagrette for several hours or overnight.
Almost forgot, I like garlic in it also.
WE plant it in November during a full moon and harvest in June. We plant only the biggest and best looking cloves. The peanuts get tossed in a bowl for use in soups
I harvest the basil with the flowering tops. It makes for a slightly sweeter tasting basil when dried. I also harvest the flowering tops only sometimes to make into a pleasant tea.
The flowering tops are also very nice in a salad.
That is an interesting and scary article!!!
I have been saving seeds for years and have also been trading seeds. I like the positive note at the end. I think it is a really good point.
We need to band together and exchange our own heirloom seeds, so our great grandchildren can eat real and...
Thanks a lot. I do believe it is Proboscidea lutea
Upon reading the recommended sites, I found that it is a close relative of sesame. It just so happens that I planted sesme seed in that location of the field last year. Maybe it is a cross or I got this seed instead of real sesame.
It is an...
We forgot to plant hot peppers this year. Fortunately I still have plenty in the freezer and dehydrated ones too.
I froze lots of them in past years and they keep the heat!!! To use them I sometimes cut them up while still frozen, other times we thaw them out. Freexing them is easy. Just put on...
Look for a salt that does not have iodine in it.
Normally table salt has iodine added which turns pickles an unappealing brown color. I have used it in emergencies. It works, but I didn't use those pickles for gifting ;)
You might also try stores like Walmart or drugstores. You'd be surprised...
I made tomato sauce with zucchini, onions, garlic and peppers. All from the garden, the tomato sauce I canned this summer. The herbs were from the garden as well.
I spent the first day back home adjusting to the time and relaxing and checking our garden.
Yesterday I picked all the zucchini I could find and found a lot!! So I made zucchini bread, stuffed zucchini, a tomato salad and meatloaf with onion and garlic from the garden. It all came out great.
It...
I will gladly post the recipes, once I return home. Mom's computer is on DSL and takes too long. I'll be back home in about 2 weeks. Feel free to remind me, if I should forget. ;)
Weall had leftovers today. Mom and Dad had leftover food from the restaurant we went to on Saturday, I had more of...
We save most of our seeds.
The plants we grew from our own gypsy peppers were very prolific and the peppers were great. some had obviously cross polinated with bell peppers, but most came true.
We also regularly save our pumkin seeds. We usually get good results and the occasional odd ball is...
We had left overs today. So yummy.
I'm visiting the folks in upstate NY. We decided to invite some friends for a nice german dinner. Mom had apples and potatoes from the garden. We made chunky apple sauce, apple pie and mom made potato dumplings. She also made "sour braten". Dad and I cut up a...
I made meatloaf, using peppers, onion and garlic from the garden. I also found a lot of green beans on my vines. So we had one last meal of fresh green beans.
I sorted the beans and seperated the large soft one and will use them in my minestrone soup that I'll be making today or tomorrow.
The...
I am going to saute some zucchini, peppers, onions and garlic and serve them with macaroni and cheese and a slice of ham.
We still have loads of zucchini, peppers and tomatoes. I am canning a batch of pureed tomatoes tonight also.
Those pickled carrots sound great.
Yesterday's lunch was from the garden. I cut up a small yellow zucchini, 1/2 tomato, 1/2 green pepper, 1/4 onion and some garlic. Sauteed them all with some olive oil, fried up a couple of eggs from my chickens and had myself a wonderfull lunch.
