It's so funny when people obviously agree with each other, but think that they are not being fully understood by the other people. Who cares? We all agree that magazines and books can be useful sources of information. Gosh, let's talk chickens and have fun!
My neighbor was growing heirlooms from seed last year, and she gave me a Bloody Butcher seedling. I had never heard of them, and felt so funny planting it within sight of our new young sweet chickens. (Can't remember how they turned out.)
I'm glad someone brought this up. Last summer I was tempted to feed hornworms to the chickens, but hornworms look so nasty and juicy that I was afraid I'd lose my cookies if I watched the chickens rip 'em apart. It must be mega gross.
Tutter probably needs a vacation, or a visit to a nice place where they all wear white jackets, after dealing with us on this topic. I bet right now, she's slipping Nifty some big cash to convince him never to ask her to be Moderator!
I think frankly, that if Nifty or whoever just assigned them (after getting those couple dozen suggestions) without even asking our opinion or vote, that we'd probably just all have said "hey, cool, I'm a [whatever]", and been happy with it.
Sometimes if you give people too much say, it can get...
I've always thought this was a good program. Our local foodbank only takes non-perishables, which my husband and I contribute to through our church's food baskets. Our nearest large town (where most of the outreach programs are) is 45 minutes away.
Just a thought for those of us rich in soil, and ability & inclination to toil:
What Is Plant A Row
for the Hungry (PAR)?
Plant A Row for the Hungry is a people-helpingpeople
program designed to assist in feeding the
hungry in their own community. Launched in 1995,
this national public...
Ahem, I'm not sure if I'm going to jinx myself, but I THINK I might have seen a sprout in the general vicinity of where I have sowed exactly five packets of seed approximately every-other-week since March....
Shhhh,,, it MIGHT be a carrot seedling!
Pat, that's a great idea. Makes me think our neighborhood needs to unite for a street-long yard sale. I have some leftover "Red Lightning" tomato seedlings I'm not going to put in the garden (thanks to other EasyGarden advice about that hybrid)...
There's always good ol' "Organic Gardening" magazine, which is very informative whether you're totally into organic gardening or not.
Also, "Fine Gardening" is good, although in my past experience, they are more into flower gardening and garden design...
"Garden Design" magazine is like Fine...
Well, I for one, would like to have my member name changed to "Buff Allium oshaninii", but that's just me...
[just kidding]
Okay, alright, I'm leaving now.
When I first posted my list of suggestions, my last one "Gone to Seed" seemed a logical progression that most plants take, then I couldn't resist definitely including it for laughs. I wasn't serious, and I should have added "ha, ha", or "just kidding" after it, since you guys don't know me and...
I think cold outdoor soil would be a big inhibitor of growth. I've learned that, as much as we try, we truly can't fool Mother Nature. Plants just won't grow until the conditions are right.
Warm weather crops will sit and sulk and drive you crazy until that wonderful time of the season...
Reinbeau, yes, Latin names get right to the nitty gritty of a plant's identity. But before I got edumacated, I had a Master Gardener friend who used them exclusively and I felt very clueless and hopeless. She seemed to enjoy that. Using both terms (Latin and common) when talking with a...
I've read that garlic takes a full 9 months in the ground to get usable garlic heads - that's why they should be planted in the fall, like tulips. So therefore, I don't think yours matured early and are ready to harvest after just 3 months in the ground, even though the browning leaves are the...
My thoughts on this subject are to keep the Member Titles light. I've never seen a bunch of people who can get more pretentious, know-it-all and Latin name-dropping than educated gardeners (and I'm one of them, unfortunately).
So I think names without "status" would be best, or names that...
Well, I support my pea plants by working two jobs and cleaning rental houses on Saturdays. Pea plants are very demanding and have expensive requirements...
