When I lived in Colorado where plants would actually grow, the grass would stay green over the septic tank all year long from the heat. It would be green even under the snow! The deer would also bed down there because it was warm. I think that would be a nice place for gardening, as long as you...
My husband found one on clearance at a store yesterday and since it said garlic, he scooped it up. Fortunately, thanks to having read this post, I had heard of it. It's a little wilty, but I think it will be all right. I can't find any information on the web about eating it, everywhere says that...
Chicken stalker, that is ingenious!
A flat roof like the one pictured would be blown over by the wind, but I think sections of A-frame that are short enough I can pick them up to get to the plants underneath would work. Hmm....time to go gather sticks, maybe. We do have a ton of that...
I have learned that vegetable gardening where I live is almost impossible in the summer. It is very hot (100+ for months straight), dry (no rain between January and October), and can get windy. (As in, windy enough to blow a metal storage shed into the neighbor's yard and crumple it into a ball)...
The name brand of those is Hatch. I don't know if you can buy Hatch seeds, but "Anaheim" is just about identical.
They like a lot of heat to sprout and produce, and need a pretty long growing season. You may have to start them early indoors where you are. Also, the more they are watered, the...
I looked up cabbage loopers, and it seems a likely culprit. Those caterpillars look very familiar to me, we've had a bunch of them around as long as I can remember...I didn't know they were a pest though, so I usually leave them alone thinking they are butterflies!
Are there any companion...
I have not noticed moths in the garden, but we have had a lot of moths on the porch lately...it's definitely not aphids, that is the first thing I checked for. We don't have slugs here either, it's way too dry.
I think I have bugs eating my cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. They are not bothering any other plant, but those plants are disappearing. They start with some little holes in the leaves, which get bigger and bigger until after a few days the young plants are just stumps. They are inside...
No, I do a weekly 50% water change in the tank. The plants are fed through the "soil" in the container, but also suck nutrients out of the water. It is not only beautiful as a decoration in the house, but allows me to stock fish more heavily without filling the water up with ammonia from them...
You're talking about plants growing out the top of a fish tank? I keep one like that. =) Tropical plants that like a wet climate can be grown in planters that hang inside the tank, and the plants are fed partly by the water in the tank.
I put bermuda and alfalfa hay on my garden as mulch, even though the goats have feeders, they waste about a fourth of their hay...they pull out a huge mouthful, and rather than chewing it in the feeder, they walk around chewing it, and drop bits everywhere.
It does end up growing. I...
Looks like they are having fun. My two old does are always going at it, they can't decide between them who is the queen. And I think they just like to play too, they will wag their tails the whole time they are "fighting".
I love the flying ears, that is too funny. You've got some good looking...
I planted eggplant this summer, and only one plant made it through the transplant into the garden. It grew into a large, beautiful plant that has been flowering nonstop for several months but has never made any fruit. The blossoms always fall off and nothing happens. Does it need another plant...
Thanks for the video! I've been enjoying Backwards Beekeeping, they have some good information.
Mine aren't QUITE that bad...sort of like that on a smaller scale. Requeening might be a consideration. I'll try smoking myself also, good idea! It seems the attacking gets worse as soon as one...
