What is happening to my garlic?

One more way to use garlic aside from putting them in a jar with olive oil is to make some great tasting Mojo-de-ajo care of Rick Bayless recipe.. Yum! That stuff is SOO good! His recipe can be found here...

    What's eating our Spinach/Chard?

Hmm.. Haven't seen any of those but that doesn't mean they're not there hiding.. I'll give it a shot..

    Is this Kale?

We've eaten lots of bok choi and none has been nearly as big as this stuff or the same color.. The leaves on these are probably 8" wide by ~12" long.. Big dudes..

    Should my garlic be up?

Also, try to know what sort of garlic you're growing.. I wouldn't bother growing our grocery store garlic as 99% of it is elephant garlic near us.. I ordered some Spanish red hard neck garlic last year (took >6 months to get since I ordered out of season).. However, it's growing great -- I just...

    What's eating our Spinach/Chard?

So, we've got a handful of chard & spinach plants but the bugs are eating more than we are.. I don't see any obvious bugs eating the leaves -- I'm thinking it happens at night.. Would covering them with a PVC frame covered with window screen keep the pests at bay? Here's an overhead pic of the...

    Is this Kale?

Hi all.. We purchased various plants at the farmers market that were ready for the garden a while back.. Some died, some lived before we were able to take care of them.. I think this one is Kale -- but wanted to check.. Is that correct? The leaves are HUGE and the bugs don't seem to like them...

    Weed ID..

Hi all.. We've seen a fair amount of this weed this year -- I've lived in the area for decades and never seen this one before.. If you try to pull it with your bare hands, it's got hairy needed on the stems that cause you to itch after you get poked.. The roots are long & straight.. Any ideas?

    Expensive trip to Tractor Supply

I've never heard of TSC but notice they've got lots of stores here in California -- unfortunately the closest is several hours away in Bakersfield.. Luckily we're visiting my mother in Oregon this weekend and could stop by the following week on the way down in one of their many stores off I5 and...

    Very old tomato seeds

Yup.. When I was a kid and into my teens and we had a disease afflicting a plant/tree we would visit a local nursery where an elderly gentleman would identify the pest and give us a course of action to remedy the situation.. In later years that same gentleman still loved to do his job and was...

    Are my blueberries dead?!

You've heard of slow-learners? I guess these are slow 'leafers'.. ;)

    Garden is now tilled.

I'll be heading up that direction sometime Saturday.. Gonna go visit 'mom' in Oregon on the coast but will hopefully be able to travel up the '5' to make the trip a bit faster than taking the 101.. I'll wave as we drive near your area! :)

    Thinning - How?

Yes, they were kinda laying all over each other -- the ones in the egg shells (at least some of them) are trying to stand-up but none in the hydro yet.. They're not dying but just not moving as fast as they were.. My Garlic on the other hand is growing like crazy in the hydro.. I've not...

Suggest something new for the garden

How about some Garlic (I'm growing red spanish (aka Roja)), tomatillo's (used in salsa's), corn... Shallots.. Shallots are really easy as are Garlic. Another few that come to mind -- spinach, swiss chard (and other greens), beets.. ;)

The longest root structure i've ever seen!

You must have one heck of a yard for 200 tomato's & peppers! I'll be starting some more seedlings soon in our newly purchased Root Riot kit which can do 50 seedlings.. I've got a bunch of tomato's and various other plants I'll be growing indoors until things get a bit warmer outside -- although...

    Thinning - How?

I did this several weeks ago with some butterhead lettuce seedlings.. They were growing in my hydroponics mix (vermiculite) and I had tons in something the size of a kitty litter box -- something along the lines of 30-40 of them.. (long story). Anyway, I dug them up by hand to move some into...

    A walk through the garden

Our red spanish garlic (which I had to wait 6 months to get) is doing OK in the garden but fantastic in my wick-based hydroponics ;) The in-ground single garlic (which was taken from the hydro setup when young) is perhaps 4-5" tall whereas the hydro garlic (12 heads) are quickly closing in at...

    Bad weather coming

Crazy! Looks like some of the plants will probably pull thru as long the rain stays away for a while..

Rabbits safe and sound at White Mountain Ranch

Hope you're getting all fixed up! There are some good places down there in San Diego.. I believe UCSD just opened a new heart 'wing' for people with heart issues.. Wishing you the best for a speedy recovery!! :weight
