All the books say 1" a week but there are so many variables...how high the temps are, how humid, how windy, cloudy day or sunny day, how deep the mulch or no mulch at all... using a rain guage is ok if you get regular rain or use a sprinkler... I will dig out a 3 inch hole to check on how...

Yes they do...would rather have flowers or veggies DH would rather the lawn which is mostly weeds...one year he put down a weed and feed and killed most of the lawn because there wasnt much grass...

Drove by a farm stand tonight... They had seedlings for sale...well I had to go check it out...I picked up a pumpkin, tomato, pepper, egg plant, Red seed potatoes and cabbages that I didnt have...I am going to run out of space....

my peas are up in last years wood shavings and chicken poo I did it for the fun of it wanted to see if they would grow part of my rose garden and in back ground the trellis my son made me this year I will be growing cucumbers on it...
