    new hatches

WOW! I didn't realize that so many of you have the chick-itis like me! I have ten week-old pullets right now and a funny story. I have a EE hen that has been broody (first time) for nearly 3 months. I have tried, unsucessfully, several times to break her up. She has just found other...

    Harvested the Butternut Squash...

My favorite way to eat squash is to cut them in half, add chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and butter to the top then wrap in foil and bake till soft. YUMMMM! I do this with yellow crooked neck mostly, because that's what I grow in the flowerbeds! They make beautiful flowers.

Some pretty veggie flowers from today in the garden.

Okay, I'm intrigued! Please tell us novices something about micro photography. I have the basic (one step up from pocket-type) fixed lense, digital camera. What do I need to do to explore this endevor? Do I have to buy a camera that will accept a special lense? Do share your knowledge.

    Salsa Verde with Green Tomatoes

Don't be afraid to experiment! Why not make three batches? One with peeled green tomatoes, one without, one with bell peppers...keep track so that you can decide which you prefer on your next batch. If one or the other is not to your taste, you won't have as much to use up...or it could be...

    All my chickens are gone

I'm sorry! Bless your heart, I've been there and know how it feels -- rotten! I'm no expert on tracks, but it looks like dog (big dog) to me. A big cat would kill a couple and take them away to eat them. A dog will kill until there are none running. I hope you get whatever it is and can...

    My first salad garden

Vfem - I may have gotten the wrong radish, the man at the co-op said, "Solid red, or red and white?" I pictured my perfect radish, red on the outside and white on the inside and said, "Red and white!" LOL Oh well, it is what it is! I will be fine if I don't get any broccoli, it is just for...

    My first salad garden

I planted my first salad garden today! I have grown cucumbers and tomatoes for many years, but never lettuce. I planted Buttercrunch, Iceburg, and Red lettuce plants that are 4" to 6" tall. I also planted some brocolli plants with 6 +/- leaves. Next, I plan to plant lettuce seeds (something...

Please pray for our big dog friend, Spartacus.

Oh no! Calls for a nice soft bed in the house where he can see you and not be in the middle of everything. He'll heal faster with that special attention. Give him a hug from me!

    Ornamental potato vines

I purchased some potato vines to grow on top of my wall. They had no potatoes when I set them out. They only grew a little and not nearly as I had hoped so I don't know if the potatoes have formed. I want to keep them to put back there in the spring. Has anyone had luck overwintering them in...

    Canning Conundrum

I am no canning expert, but it sounds like you didn't quite leave enough room in the top of the jar and a little moisture escaped as the pressure was released. I THINK it will be fine. Canners, correct me if I'm wrong.

My compost is full of fat curly maggots??

I see those all the time, some as big as my thumb! The chickens and guineas make short work of them and they always come back.
