    Sloooowly I turn.... (with pics)

Digits - Thank you and Yes, the bed is 36' long and goes from 0' on each end to to 5 1/2' deep (wide?) in the middle. If you look closely, there are T-posts holding up bird netting to keep the chickens out. The area that is planted is just over 1/3 of the whole length of the bed. All of the...

    Sloooowly I turn.... (with pics)

I posted these pics in another thread but it was the wrong one. My apologies if you have already seen them. I am doing my own thing with sheet composting. I guess I get impatient. I created a bed early last fall up against a block wall in my backyard that is only 20' from my house. I lined...

What's the hardest you've ever worked for FREE fruit/veggies?

LOL! I never saw an elderberry, either, that I know of, but I hear it makes pretty good wine. As for hunting for morals, my dad cultivated enough for everyone and in my family, you were spoon fed your daily serving every day! If I didn't get enough, it was my own fault.... ;)

    Saffron Crocus Pics

I'm learning so much! I have heard of Saffron, the spice, but never used it. How do you harvest it? What is it like and how do you use it?

What's the hardest you've ever worked for FREE fruit/veggies?

Kassaundra - Slump, huh? No doubt a southern thing (I'm born and raised in Alabama.) I think I'll stick to calling it cobbler! LOL! I must admit though that chocolate cobbler sounds sinful! Do you have that recipe? How about one for "slump?" Anyone out there know the recipes? Retired -...

    Saffron Crocus Pics

Those are beautiful! I have never seen any of those. Is this time of year when they normally bloom? I thought crocus only bloom in early spring...

Very Tall Sunflowers edit 9-9 picture reposted

Oh. How Beautiful! I am jealous! My DH planted some sunflowers for me this spring, or so he said. He has a "green field" behind our house that he plants for the deer every fall and spring. He planted about 30 lbs. of sunflower seeds in an area 30' X 150' and said he did it so I would have...

What's the hardest you've ever worked for FREE fruit/veggies?

You know, you're right, that bucket may be bigger in my memory than in reality! After all, I was alot smaller back then! It was this one special "berry bucket" and that was the deal, if it was full, Mom would make cobbler. Once I started picking berries, the bucket would go in the fridge, and...

What's the hardest you've ever worked for FREE fruit/veggies?

For me, it was gathering wild dewberries for cobbler when I was a kid. Mom would make the cobbler only if I brought her a 2 1/2 gallon bucket full. I would search far and wide to find that many, come home with briar scratches and bug bites, but the cobbler was totally worth it (especially with...

This ought to be a good one.....who is from BYC??

I was just thinking. One of our favorite trips happened about three years ago. We hiked to Abrams Falls (back end of Cade's Cove) and had a blast! All of my photo's from that trip were in a box in storage and were taken by the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa back in April. I guess we will have...

This ought to be a good one.....who is from BYC??

County Extension Office? Nope, never used it! I am that "trial and error" type as well. Where are you in the Smokies? Anywhere near the National Park? I try to get up that way once a year but don't always make it. My last visit was to Gatlinburg in July of last year. My stepdaughter had...

This ought to be a good one.....who is from BYC??

Great find! What (if anything) did you put in the bottom for drainage? Is it good dirt all the way to the bottom? I have a spot next to the driveway that grows tomatoes and peppers well. I gave it the year off for rotation purposes, although I don't have another place to plant tomatoes...

    Next Year's Garden-ALREADY

Thanks, Lesa, I was beginning to think I was being ignored! I am spoiled by the size and speed of the BYC forums! Looking forward to adjusting to a more relaxed pace here! Almost all of my kitchen scraps go to the chickens and dog. I use the manure in the beds as I clean out the barn and...
