    Squash Freezing Question

As far as the zucchini bread goes, I make the bread right after grating the squash and freeze the loaf after it has cooled completely. To thaw, place in the refrigerator to thaw slowly. It's a great thing to have for a special weekend breakfast...sometimes we even toast the slices in the...

    cardoon

HiDelight, be sure to email me just in case because I forgot all about this forum, shame on me. :hu Do you have any photos to post that show the whole plant next to something else to compare the scale? I'd love to see! That's such a beautiful blue and I prefer dried flowers to artificial...

    green tomato pie

I think it was waaaaay back in the 80s when I had one, when I still lived with my parents. It tasted much better than I anticipated, like an "almost apple" pie.

another way to freeze green beans? Update--see post #7

Thanks for the replies! :bouquet I think I will skip the blanching, why make more work for myself? I think I will experiment a bit by leaving some beans whole which will be sliced right right after thawing--I have this awesome ceramic paring knife that will cut through veggies as easily as...

    Manure?

Might try contacting your local 4-H club to see if any of the kids are raising rabbits...maybe a pet store will hold some bunny berries for you. Another option is to see if there are any "house rabbits" near you via the House Rabbit Society. Maybe you need your own bunnies.

    cardoon

Please describe the taste of cardoon. Does it really taste like artichokes? I didn't know these grew so tall...how big around do they get at the base? Most likely, I won't have enough room in the garden to spare for such a monstrosity, but I'd love to see this (and taste it) for myself someday.

another way to freeze green beans? Update--see post #7

My dh's grandparents used to freeze corn whole, still wrapped in the inner husks. All they did was remove the outer husks, that's it. Evidently, the husks help keep it "fresh". We've tried it and it works pretty good, except it takes up more freezer space than we can waste, so that's why we...

    Squash Freezing Question

2dream----When the frozen slices are thawed, are they watery...or rubbery when cooked? My MIL & I have followed Ball's instructions to the letter and we don't like the results. She used regular Zip-Loc bags, I used the vacuum-seal type where I freeze the contents partially before sealing. I...

another way to freeze green beans? Update--see post #7

Just wondered if anybody has used a shortcut in freezing green beans as a woman I know did. She washes the fresh beans, pats them dry with a towel (she said this is a must!), breaks them, the freezes the beans in a vacuum-sealed bag. She totally skips the blanching step that most have us have...

Square Foot Gardening With Mel's Mix?

I've not heard of the Mel's Mix before. So, I'm wondering about the mix being deficient in trace minerals.

Is a tiller a good investment??

Dh has a Troybilt & I have an electric Mantis, which has a lot of power, believe it or not. It's so quiet that I can use it without worrying about disturbing the sleep of my neighbor that works graveyard shift. Plus, it doesn't belch out smoke either. I tried using my dad's gas-powered...

    Yellow Crookneck vs Scallopini?

I've decided to order the scallopini seeds without the benefit of a taste test. After growing the yellow crooknecks for 25+ years, I'll try something different. If my neighbor simply must have the crooknecks, I'll save her a spot in the garden. :D

    Yellow Crookneck vs Scallopini?

simple life--I agree, the scallopinis are so cute. Flavor is important, of course. My favorite way of fixing yellow squash is a quick saute in butter/olive oil, with onions & maybe diced green peppers added in. Sometimes I fix my version of pasta primavera. Rarely do I make casseroles in the...

    Gourmet potato recommendation

I order from Wood Prarie too. Great company! For an early potato, I chose Caribe; for baking I grew Butte, and the other varieties I picked were Red Cloud, Rose Finn Apple Fingerling, & Cranberry Red. My soil is a heavy clay, full of rocks, so I plant my potatoes above the soil line...

Those of you with extra freezers

My extra freezer is a small chest set up on a wooden pallet, under the house. Technically we have a crawl space, not a basement, but the area by the door is tall enough for the freezer lid to lift up. Plus, the temps under the house stay fairly consistent as well.
