Boy is that true. I miss mine, as well, and one has been gone since I was a teen.
One set of my grandparents worked in a school cafeteria during the depression; as extra income, I think. You have a treasure there.
I know someone in Glendale, Arizona. Small world! :)
What about heating the oil with mint in it, letting it steep for an hour or so, then straining and using as you were going to anyway; rather than water?
This is a great idea, thanks!
I am still looking forward to our chocolate-chip mint ice cream. I didn't take into consideration how long the...
How do you plan to freeze them? :)
I just got this message when I tried to post; has anyone ever seen it before:
"The following errors need to be corrected before the message can be posted:
At least 60 seconds have to pass between posts. Please wait a little while and try posting again."
Don't forget the garlic! :D
Actually, now is not too early to order it. They will ship it in time for fall planting. Territorial Seeds has quite a few varieties. :)
When did you plant them, and how is the soil; have you grown in it before in that spot? How's the weather...I would think good for corn, where you are?
Are they getting a lot of water? Have they had any compost or such?
I agree with that. (All of it.)
I grow a variety which never gets especially tall, but I've grown it in the worst areas of the garden, and had it small even by it's standards. Still, the ears were fine.
Organic doesn't mean no fertilizer, just being choosy about soil additions. With chickens...
Good ideas. I also thought of: carrots, beets, green onions, pearl onions, patty pans, and herbs like basil, parsley, marjoram, savory, and cilantro.
If you are looking for permanent plantings, you could start rosemary, thyme, sage etc. Do you have, or want, mint?
If you plant some flowers...
We were growing Little Gems, but not once it got warm. Here we grow lettuce only in the spring, and fall.
I'm sorry yours bolted. Giving Pat's suggestions a try might yield you something. I'm sorry that I don't remember where you live/your climate.
Good luck! :)
I know the logic behind what Oakland is saying, and he's right. But if you *need* the seeds to be 100%, with no chance of crossing, you can bag them, and hand pollinate.
I'm paranoid, I know, but I cannot afford cross pollination. I picture industrious ants foiling my plans! ;)
For your...
I've also been picking radishes, green onions, chives, peppers, and baby beets that I thinned. Also more herbs.....basil, oregano, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, and peppermint for the ice cream. :)
Oh, and a corn plant. I didn't want to, but an animal broke it. Rats. But, Penelope the goat...
Oh boy, we're talking about frying green tomatoes! :D
They can also be dredged in a little flour, or a mix of flour and corn meal, and fried. Take out, put onto a platter to drain on paper towels, and salt then; serve immediately.
They are good just as a snack, too, or with dinner.
Pluuuus...
I couldn't see the photo this morning! That picture is going to bring back a lot of great memories one day. What a cute picking partner, and great looking basket of fruit! :)
I freeze some specifically to eat frozen, as a snack, in the summer, too! I go through them, and take the best ones to...
Is it a "sweet bay", or a California Bay Laurel?
We have a whole property of the latter, and as full grown trees, they can take all kinds of light, but as little trees, they grow under the canopy.
Are you growing it for cooking bay leaves?
No, but it's scheduled for tonights dinner, actually! Dh is the ice cream maker here, and I know I only have a couple more weeks to do something with my mint for the season. I've already made mint jelly, and dried mint. It will be back soon enough, but I'd like to take advantage of it while it's...
Yes, they are the same plant. We generally call the fresh plant, cilantro, and the seeds, coriander.
Aside from baking, it's also an ingredient in many chili powders. I put some in mine. :)
Mirime, maybe this is the wrong thing to suggest, but I don't think you needed to throw the 2nd batch away.....
I mean, the ingredients were all perfect, you saw to that. The canning just didn't go well. So what you might have wanted to do, was put them in the ice box and just eat them in a...
