How do i naturally keep the slugs away!?

GET SOME DUCKS. My ducks are voracious slug eaters. My female duck ate 24 slugs that I caught and fed to her yesterday in about 30 seconds. I let them free range on days when I don't let the chickens out, when they don't get out I spend a few minutes collecting slugs to put in their enclosure...

    Tomato Tease

A friend of mine had some this time last year by using hoop houses. They were regular sized, not cherry, as well. I was very impressed. I did some pumpkins in my (new, inspired by him) hoop house this year, and they're looking okay, but nothing amazing. Must continue to try!

2012 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - weigh in by 15 October

How long have your watermelons been in the ground? I am happy mine have 4 real leaves now. My canteloupe actually have small yellow male flowers, surprising to me, but I'm sure I still won't be able to get melons out of my garden. I continue to try and try though. It's 120 degrees in my...

    Tomato Tease

I just started getting little tiny green tomatoes on my buds. I started them from seed 03.23 and transplanted them outside 05.12. This includes my "early" varieties like 4th of July and Northern Exposure. ... sigh. It's so hard to wait up here for the garden.

It's a sticky yellow trap. You can make your own, but they're attracted to yellow so make sure there's a bunch of yellow. I bought mine from burpee: http://www.burpee.com/gardening-supplies/pest-control/cucumber-beetle-trap-prod001803.html?_requestid=449498 I didn't even put the lure on it...

2012 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - weigh in by 15 October

The cucumber beetles are already here and so are the squash bugs. I squished a bunch today and then put my row covers over what I could. My cucumber beetle trap is working really well this year.

I think you let 1 or 2 fruits start to form. Once one starts to take off better - better shape, better growth, you pinch the other one off. After that you focus all your attention on that one fruit, and pinch everything else that forms later off.

My hopes for a giant pumpkin are dimming. We had such cold weather 2 weeks ago, and about 9 inches of rain... now it's 95 degrees... despite being in a hoop house... they're not growing so well. :rant

Potato's above ground = Epic fail.

I do better with a lot of things in containers versus the ground here, because the ground is so cold for so long but the container soil warms up nicely. Both peppers and tomatoes do better in containers for me versus the ground. My yield might not be as good as someone in say North Carolina...

    The weather is crazy

95 here, too. To think, 2 weeks ago I was hauling up firewood to feed my wood stove so we didn't freeze.

Potato's above ground = Epic fail.

I had what I consider to be decent luck two years ago in trash bags. I didn't have a ton of potatoes, but I had a good amount considering I planted 5 potatoes in each bag. The biggest problem with the trash bag method was the fact that the bag was black and it got so hot. If I didn't soak it...

    Heritage tomato suggestions, please.

GREAT PHOTO!! I'd like to second that... I'm so surprised how big my mortgage lifters are so far, and it's only mid-June. And it's Maine. How big were your fruits?

    Heritage tomato suggestions, please.

Thanks for that endorsement, I've been looking at the bloody butcher, and was almost ready to try it this year but figured I'd give the 4th of July hybrid another chance to impress me with its earliness this year. The first year I had it my first tomato was mid-August, but it was a cold and...

    Heritage tomato suggestions, please.

I planted my first black krim last year, it was the tastiest tomato I've ever eaten although it looked a little weird. Easy to grow (in Maine). Started a bunch more from seeds this year and plan to have them each year, weather willing. I do plant yellow pear as well, they're a bit mealy but...

    Manure Tea

I made mine last year 6 weeks before I needed it. Stirred it every day and then decanted a small amount into the watering can and diluted the heck out of it. It smelled awful. The painters that I had here ended up accidentally stepping on the container of poo and water (surprisingly they didn't...

    Vegetable Container Garden

No idea... they just don't pay any attention to them unless they have veggies on them, and then I'm in trouble. My tomatoes and pumpkins really suffered at the beaks last year. I have a fence around some of my garden this year so that helps. But for some reason my herd of chickens (somewhere...
