Ok, I have a dumb question.

I don't think it was a dumb question either. I've always thought the "dumb questions" were the ones NOT asked cause ya never know until ya do. And with that analogy, I'm the one with the "dumb question" problem cause I've not known what a bushel measurement was and had never asked-but always...

1st timer - starting from seed

First let me say :welcome About the watering-In addition to what digits/Steve said, you could also check to see if it needs water by scratching down into the dirt around the plants a few inches to see if it's dry or damp below the surface since raised beds dry out faster than in-ground. One...

Probably a weed, am hoping to learn for sure....

Is it sticky? Like sticking to your clothes, skin, EVERYTHING??? Sorry, I don't know the name of it or know just what it is but I sure treat it like a weed. My attitude is "If I didn't plant it there & I don't want it there, then it's a weed & out ya go!" Good luck.

    dwarf root stock?

I guess I didn't include enough information in my original question and I apologize. I'm not looking to do any grafting of trees, I was more curious as to what nursery trees were grafted too- that if I bought any and the rootstock grew up along with the fruit graft, just what would I expect...

    Potatoes in weird weather

I planted mine about March 1 and haven't seen them break ground yet either. So you're not alone. What you can do (like I did) is to very carefully unearth them to see what's going on. I planted mine whole and they were still fine and were starting to grow sprouts, so I replanted just not quite...

~ HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD...? New madness ?? ~

Maybe I'm not understanding & have spoken out of turn here & I apologize. I was only trying to say that $20 would go farther for a family of four in the store when buying processed foods & very little if any meat. Even at Walmart, block or preshredded cheese is around $5-$6 per lb (roughly)...

~ HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD...? New madness ?? ~

Not only is it cheaper for the schools to provide processed foods, but also for the families struggling at home. The schools that offer the choice between healthy foods & processed, the kids will usually choose processed because that's what they are used to eating. It's cheaper in the stores to...

    Someone help please.................

:welcome I wouldn't give up on them just yet, sometimes there is still life in the roots even when you don't see life in the leaves. It may also depend on how deeply you planted them in the dirt. I think there is supposed to be some of the crown (where the leaves & stems meet the roots)...

    Whats your favorite veggie

Oh my, is this a trick question? I love lots & lots of veggies fresh picked from the garden and it's easier to ask what I don't like cause the list is much shorter-turnips, rutabagas, brussel sprouts :sick If I have to pick one over the others, I'd have to say tomatoes because they are so...

    Understanding crop rotation

My Aunt always planted the same stuff in the same place every year and always had a great harvest & I could never figure that one out. I just attributed it to her having valley (old riverbed) soil and probably alot of fertilizer. I keep trying to move stuff every year, but I'm finding that...

What to plant for a family of four....

I guess I was thinking since he was from around here, his seeds would be more for this climate & therefore more local & trustworthy. But apparently not. Good thing I've already been collecting heirloom seeds from other sources. And this isn't to say there's anything wrong with Eastern...

What to plant for a family of four....

I'm just thinking this is a good start for a general idea, but definately not perfect and could be misleading to a beginner. 1. Not many people eat all those varieties. 2. For corn, you need atleast 4 rows of plants for good pollination and it says 140 ft row but 210 seeds spaced 8" to 12"...

    Canning Jars

I've had similar issues with labeling my jars and now will use a sharpie pen to name & date the food on the metal flat lid since it has to be replaced every time anyway. Although it's not much room and I usually have to write it in shorthand to fit. I don't know if they make the smooth jars...

    grain seeds?

Another good place is "Seeds of Change", they have cover crops too. For grains they offer barley, oats, buckwheat, triticale, "pearl millet" (I don't know if this is what you were looking for), sorghum-sudangrass, and winter rye AND they sell it in small quantities like 1/4 lb for $2.29...

Flowers to plant in veggie garden

My understanding is "anything fragrant" like herbs & flowers. The bees may not be able to read :gig , but they sure can smell. Keep in mind too about any plants that have nectar like clovers, hairy vetch, nastursiums, etc. Psst....as a kid I would pick the flowers and suck out the sweet nectar...
