Not sure but maybe the heat is slowing them down?? While my little tomatoes (Sweet 100's, cherry, yellow plum) are ripening, my marglobe tomatoes are pale green and have been that way for weeks. Our weather has been VERY hot. The plant looks healthy so I am not going to panic yet.
I go by smell. If it smells strongly like melon it is usually ripe. This works for many melon varieties. Not sure about the golden sweets though. I have a few vines going but no melons yet.
"Poor Man's Capers
Real capers are pickled buds from the caper bush, a perennial shrub that thrives in the Mediterranean region. Capers are a gourmet condiment and these pickled nasturtium seeds are an impressive substitute.
After the blossom falls off, pick the half-ripened (still green)...
No splits at all. The only tomato variety I have had splitting trouble with are purple Cherokees, so I just didn't grow those this year. Got another handful this morning and just ate them in a salad. Mmmmmmmm!
Hi Chris!!!
I HATE those evil little trees. The pods from the neighbor's sprouting in EVERYTHING. At least Kathy & Dave got rid of theirs in the front yard. Now if they would only nuke the ones in back :P
This guy was killing invasive camphor laurels, but the process should work on our evil...
I like the idea of rabbits on the ground as opposed to being in cages. I raise my quail on the ground despite a vast majority of people raising them in pens on wire. They exhibit more natural behavior being on the ground and since I started with a typical wire cage, I actually have a basis for...
I haven't had any success with any of those. Now Chinese cabbage is a different story. It wasn't heading, so I cut it for the leaves and froze them for cabbage roles. It grew back and it should be read to head in a couple of weeks when our weather cools off. So 2 crops from one planting. This is...
Good luck with the new projects....and I did warn you! LOL
just a note on the Love Lies Bleeding Amaranth....mine looks great. Nobody would ever guess it is a "crop". The neighbors have been Oooing and Aaahhhing over them. Hubby even thinks they look cool and he normally doesn't even notice the...
My vines are going nuts, but so far I only have male flowers. Not a single pumpkin. I still think I can win biggest pumpkin leaf though. Some are about 3' across.
Oh no d!!! I have had years like that, but I was only planting flowers at that time. "There is always next year!" seems to be the gardener's battle cry :P Is there anything you can plant for a fall crop?
My "big" tomatoes this year are marglobes and black krim. So far the marglobes are looking to be the most productive. LOTS of green tomatoes all over the plants. When I bought the seed packet I had no idea marglobes were the ancestor to many of the new varieties and they were so disease...
Last fall I ended up with peppers infested with aphids. I over winter peppers inside and bought these on clearance to grow along with my chiltepin pepper plant. After battling the bugs for months I finally just threw out all my inside plants. Boy was i pissed off. My hot pepper plant was 3 years...
The thermometer in my window (full sun) said 104 today. It was only 98 in the shade. :th
On a happy note, I harvested my first tomato today!!! It was a little yellow heirloom plum tomato :D I even shared with hubby. Aren't you proud of me? :gig
I actually prefer a little more acid bite in my...
That's one of the reasons for planting with "sisters". In the 3 sisters garden, you use pole beans to help secure the corn stalks. Wind got some of mine before the beans started climbing. I was able to save most of them...and I planted dutch bantam.
I think I have some bean seeds left. I can plant those tomorrow. I just planted cukes last week. Squirrel rampage took out all my little plants 3 times. I HATE SQUIRRELS!!!! I have the latest batch planted in wire milk crates lined with hardware cloth. So far the squirrels haven't broken in and...
