    shredded irises--again

I miss my irises too. What my dog doesn't eat, and my kids don't pick, and the squirrels don't dig up, the chickens will surely finish off. le sigh.

    Hi! newbie with a question!

Peas and radishes produce in July here in chilly MN - if you're in zone 6 you can plant now (unlike us...)

How to store and dry herbs the best way....

I don't believe in microwaves, but my next door neighbor dries all her herbs in the micro.... Seems to be fine. I'm just a simple gal and hang mine to dry.

    facial masques

Back in the day, I had trouble with acne and this home-made mask really helped: Strawberry Mask for Troubled Skin 1/2 c fresh strawberries 1 egg white 2 t honey Mix ingredients until smooth using a blender (or you could even use a fork). Spread it over your face and neck, sit back and take a...

    Daylillies Taking Over

A couple years ago, I pulled out dozens of daylilies from beside my driveway. Couldn't GIVE them away... Goofy things *bloomed* right there on my driveway, roots exposed and all. I swear, you can't kill them.

    Transplanting & Dividing Peonies

I almost always divide peonies in the spring. Oops. Haven't had any *real* problems, though. I think they're easier when they're not all big and leafy. Just be gentle with them and you'll be fine. How lucky! When we sold our home in Minneapolis, I actually wrote it into the purchase agreement...

    Care of wooden handles

I know this is an old post, but thought I'd add my $.02 -- Mineral Oil for the metal parts, Linseed oil for the wooden handles. I oil everything up (teak patio furniture, my huge cedar arbor, hand tools, even the chicken coop) with a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and mineral spirits every spring...

    rain barrels

http://home.comcast.net/~leavesdance/rainbarrels/safety.html I'm no expert, but I'm guessing that you're better off collecting water from a metal roof than an asphalt one. The comment about getting a water test done is a good one. Then you don't have anything to worry about. Also, I keep a...

    Bare Root Raspberries

Hi Sparkles - I have kept bare root roses in my basement in buckets of water for up to 4 weeks while waiting for the ground to thaw. They grow right in the water. I don't know why raspberries would be much different. I put a dash of bleach in the water to keep it from getting funky.

Meyer Lemon Tree in the Great White North

Okay, so I was at my local nursery last week , drooling over anything green, and happened upon some 4 ft. meyer lemon trees. Now I'm not a dolt - I know I can't grow these here, but does anyone around here have experience with putting these babies in a large pot and then bringing them indoors...

Best Vine for Chain Link Fence

Just so you know, hops can be really invasive. I had some come up in an antique rose bush of mine (dropped by a wild bird?? dunno....) and for years I've been battling it. Can't get rid of it and it chokes up the rosebush. You'd think our bitter winters would kick it off, but I think it just...

Anyone else's compost pile frozen solid?

Actually, it's exactly the idea the Native Americans had. My father, who really is the vegetable garden *master* taught me to do this. I've been doing it in my gardens for years. Works great. I found that basic kitchen scraps (mostly veggie peels and shrimp shells - no meat) decompose very...

    what type of flower

Good suggestion on the mint family (hi Steve!). Catmint is pretty with sage-y foliage and purple flowers, fragrant, gets about 18 inches high, but around 2-3 ft. wide, attracts bees and the chickens will leave it alone. It's perennial here in MN, so I'm sure you would have NO problem in Indiana...

Anyone else's compost pile frozen solid?

My pile is frozen solid too. I just plan on starting a new pile with the winter coop shavings. I'd like to get some compost on to the garden soon, but am not feeling very hopeful... could be weeks before that pile is defrosted... oh well, not like I can till the garden either, as it's frozen...

    HI! New from Minnesota!

Hi Sarah - I'm in the Cities! Welcome to TEG! Sounds like you've got your hands full. But your new place sounds like a grand adventure. And Sparkles, I hope you all are doing okay. I've been thinking of my Fargo friends from the BYC - haven't heard back from them, so thinking that they might...

Hi Catalina - Yeeks - you DID get some snow! I got some hail here in the Cities, but that's it. I haven't talked to anyone in the Fargo area - those poor folks. Like all they needed was a kick in the face and 12 inches of fresh snow. My heart goes out... Your garden is beautiful. You were...
