There was a thread earlier this month about starting avocado pits, and I lost it.
I did say it takes patience. And I wasn't kidding! This has been in water since February or so. The root started growing in late April, and just the other day it pipped! The world's slowest hatch! (I spend waaaay...
Well, two weeks later and it is still droopy! Looks exactly the same.
Hattie, all good advice, but I wasn't the one to plant it, and I can guarantee it was "dig the hole, stick it in, put the dirt back and water the heck out of it". I have seen DH in action!
I have since learned...
Good heavens, I have been hatching chicks and haven't popped in for several days!
Whem DH and I were looking for a house, Hollywood was referred to in real estate ads as "rural West Ashley"! :lau
As soon as things settle down, we'll have to do a meet and greet! :woot
Do you have chickens...
Thanks for the replies- I think the Bartlett is a fruit producer, and the Bradford is the ornamental. Haven't checked it yet, been busy trying to hatch chicks!
I gave it a deep watering yesterday, Sunday, and it looks even droopier. So maybe, it's a case of too much water! If it doesn't perk...
Hey Growin, whereabout in SC are you? I'm near the coast in Hollywood, and sometimes I can get plastic barrels from the seafood stores, wholesalers, etc. for cheap and sometimes free.
Lesa, that is a great idea! DH is a commercial painter, so we have dozens of 5 gallon buckets around. And the chickens produce plenty of manure tea, when I clean the coop, forget the bucket and it rains that night.
That's what we'll be doing next winter, thank you!
Horrors! about the trellis coming down! Yikes!
I really like the new look, without the stones is better, in my opinion. Lovely garden you have there. And free is the BEST price.
How often do you have to vacuum? :lau
This is a cheapo pear tree, and has done very well- until it was planted last Sunday! It is tagged as a "Pear Bartlett YL DWF". A dwarf Bartlett. It is about 6' tall.
Since it went into the ground, the green, new stem parts have drooped, no matter how much water we pour on it. The brown, older...
I planted the sprouted store potatoes, too. They took about 10 days, but we're already warm and humid. I had gotten seed potatoes, cut them, set out to dry- and they rotted. :th
I love sunflowers, and desperately want to grow the huge ones for the birds. The squirrels have a different agenda. They let them get 10 inches high, and then they move in for the harvest.
Our 1.6 acres is a wildlife habitat, so I'm not going to kill them, but there are days when I...
I have two avocados growing right now, in the windowsill. I take the pit out, rinse the green "meat" off, then let it dry a day or two. Next, I peel the dried brown skin off with my fingernail. Then the 3 toothpicks go it, and it is suspended in a yogurt cup.
They sometimes get slimy, so I...
If I was worried about plants poisoning my chickens, I'd ask on BYC. If I was wondering about the chickens leveling my garden, I'd post here under Diseases and Pests.
I can the see the difficulties with the crossover issues, and the reluctance of some folks to attend two forums.
Either way...
Trailing along behind, learning new things in every thread.
Our house is very dark, so I've never tried much inside, and would like to have some green in this cave!
When using the lights for growing, do they need to be on 24/7, or do you turn them off at night?
Thanks in advance, Sal.
WOW! About the time this was posted yesterday, I was craving tomato soup, because I have a cold and wanted comfort food. And not a can in the house, only chicken noodle. Bleh.
I went without, because nothing else appealed to me. I started wondering about making and canning my own. Lo and...
