My Painted Mountain came up and crows pulled up every single one, ate the corn kernel off and discarded the corn sprout to die. :he I went to TSC this evening and found rolls of 9 gauge wire, 171 feet long for $14.99. They had 3 rolls, so I got them all. I will make hoops and cover the rows. I have to replant. :somad This puts me a week behind. :rant

I'll be two weeks behind....I got sick and am coughing my head off, sitting in house, bored to death, watching outside, thinking about everything I want/need to be doing. Taking medicine like a good little girl, but I want to be outside! I got some small mesh plastic netting to go over the hoops, whenever I can go back outside.

I feel your pain. Got a miserable cold. My fever is gone but I am so congested and have no energy. This is my vacation, which is frustrating, but at least I don't have to write sub plans!

I replanted my Painted Mountain corn on the morning of April 19th, on April 25th I pushed wire bows in the ground and covered them with bird netting. I pinched the netting in place with clothespins. There was no corn showing that morning, but by that evening, there were little green sprouts showing. Just in time!! :celebrate The bird netting defeated the crows! :weee It is about 4 inches tall now! Take THAT crows! :tongue

I am planting Zola's rose ultra sweet corn. It's a new variety of open pollinated sweet corn that is red. I got the seed from J&L gardens. They mainly focus on tomatos but are branching out into other OP crops.
i have the same corn this year. we can compare notes on how well it grows for each of us.

I have decided that this year I am going to grow my sweet corn in blocks of 4 because I just don't have enough seed to plant in conventional rows.
I have planted corn in a 6-8 inch grid in beds 4'x6' and it grew just fine.
