Yes, I've grown Fortex 8 times since 2000; this will be the 9th. It is one of the 3 beans I rotate as my main snap bean, chiefly due to its lack of strings & firmness when frozen. The other two are Emerite (my favorite overall, especially for pickling) and Kentucky Wonder White #191 (which must be picked young to avoid strings, but has a rich cooked flavor).@Zeedman
"Fortex (snap)" also a pole bean...
have you grown these before? i'm trying them the first time this season and looking forwards to seeing how they go and how productive they might be.

Fortex has better than average cool-soil germination, and seems to have strong resistance to rust; so it is exceptionally tolerant of poor conditions. The vines are a little wispier than most, so I space the plants more closely. Normally that would be hills 12" apart, thinned to the strongest two; but this year I used pairs of transplants. The pod set is not as heavy as KW (which has a huge concentrated set) but is sustained over a longer period. The large 10-11" pods make up for the relatively moderate pod count. The pods mature VERY slowly, and remain stringless & free of fiber even when quite large. If you like to munch on raw snaps (I do) Fortex is sweet & tender raw, one of the best I've tasted, almost a salad bean. Their firmness makes them well suited for canning.
Their drawbacks:
The very long pods are vulnerable to wind bruising, which can cause them to twist. I plant them in sheltered locations, or downwind from other tall crops. The pods can temporarily become deformed during high temps, over 90 degrees. And their slowness to mature - one of their greatest strengths - makes them hard to save seed from. I hope to save seed this year, and if successful, will probably be racing the frost to get it. The last time I saved seed was in 2012; and while germination was still good this year (over 90%), I'll need to replenish my stock soon.
Does anyone know if Lisa is making progress with this one? I think of this one often, since first seeing it online, but don't want to bother her about it.View attachment 32449
