2021 Seed Orders

Well, I've been putting together my lists in the last few weeks and in my attempt to not do 10 different oops I forgot this/that orders and pay for shipping 10 different times I was trying to consolidate everything, but then kids distracted me and yesterday I said "oh, I'll do that tomorrow". Well, I got up at 6AM and sat down with some coffee to put in a Baker's Creed and Seed Savers order only to find that BC is shut down (starting today!!!!!!) under next Wednesday and SS is only doing a set amount of orders per day.

Get your orders in if you haven't already. Like I said I normally order my stuff earlier but I always find myself having to do second, third, fourth and fifth orders because I'm always forgetting stuff, so I tried to be super smart about listening and planning only to find that I maybe might have happened to spend too much time planning.

I’ve already gotten my orders in for this year but I’ve still been watching the seed sites. Southern exposure is still open but only for a few hours a day. Before Bakers Creek stopped taking orders they were saying a month+ just to ship. Burpee is still open as is Ferry Morse. Territorial is still open. Gurneys is open. Sustainable seed company is open. Jung is open. Park is open. Johnny’s is only taking commercial orders. They do say that they will open for home garden orders February 10-11th

Same here. Went to confirm BC order. Think I’m safe as I’m only ordering strawberry & huckleberry seeds from them. At least, now.

This is kind of a rabbit trail but may be helpful to someone.
in an effort to “organize” i made 2 list’s years ago. One for the garden and one for the greenhouse. Each list, list everything we grow and where the seed comes from. Each list is further broken down by the month/week those seeds are started or direct seeded and each year both list were fine tuned to the point that it’s pretty much an auto pilot thing now.

Example:

Early January
Johnny’s, Darki Parsley and Tango celery.
Burpee, Utah tall celery.
Late February
Johnny’s, Celebrity tomato

these list are used thru out the growing season and by fall have numerous side notes such as, more beets next year Or no turnips next year.

you get my drift. This is just a word document, easily edited each year and printed off when it’s time to order seed. January starts it all for us then nothing till Late February and then by March it seems like i run till August, so anything i can do to help the ole guy out, who dont like running; im all for.

While most are looking for black Friday specials, I'm ordering seed!

Baker Creek shut down last year, too. I'd just wanted to look up the growing time for some corn I'd gotten from them and the whole site was down. Hmpf!

There's a bunch of smaller oddball sites out there, so I ended up getting seeds from some different places than usual.

If you can find sites where you have to print out the order form and mail it in via snailmail, they're usually not as swamped in orders. Fortunately, we have seeds from the last crops for planting, it's just the new varieties that we try out every year that we have to order.

That's a nice seed site, AMKuska! They don't have the bean variety I've been looking for, but they do have some other interesting ones that don't show up on other websites.

So what's your favorite 'oddball' seed website?

Of those that you list, I have ordered from Kitazawa many times. Although I wasn't around , I remember reading in their catalog that they started in something like 1917.

I ordered from Restoration Seed only once and only a couple of things. Can't say much one way or the other but didn't have any problems. Their Gary O Sena tomato seed was what I was after since some of the characteristic dark shoulders had disappeared from the fruits from my own saved seeds. I figured that my plants had crossed with something else, over several seasons. Restoration Seed is quite new and is headquartered just a stone's throw from where I grew up in southern Oregon.

Annie's Heirloom seed is sold in a local garden center, as is High Mowing.

I USED to buy a lot from Richter's herbs Seed Zoo. That was the basis of a lot of my early grow out (especially of beans). Later supplemented by Joe Simcox's own site (now no longer in business). But they haven't really added anything in quite a while, and by now a lot of the more interesting seed is either sold out and gone (and Richter's said right up front that when a variety was sold out, that was it, it wasn't coming back) or now being offered by someone else at a more reasonable price. It's down to odd exotica like the Caucasian Caper vine seed which I couldn't grow even if I wanted to (capers like alkaline soil with lots of calcium, I have acid, too acid to easily ameliorate.)
