Thank you @pauldaoust for the welcome. I was wondering if you have the same problem with the Himalayan blackberries like we do here in the Willamette Valley?
Not here, we're more similar to the Columbia Basin in climate. If you can believe it, we have a patch of Himalayan blackberry on our property that we lovingly water and otherwise tend to. There are a couple places in the valley that do seem to have an an overgrowth, but I think they must be kept alive by seeps coming down the hills?

Huh, strange, looks fine to me on Firefox/Linux. Ah, web page debugging, eh? such a joy o_O
I'm on Linux/Firefox too, but old versions. Seems my root directory is full, so I can't get patches. I also have some bad memory which is causing me some problems. Some other weird things are happening too. Have a new (well new, when Windows 8 came out :caf) computer to set up, and wipe Windows off of, just haven't done it yet. Retiring didn't fix my procrastination problem at all. Here I thought the 2021 thread was turning into a Linux help one! I was going to ask some questions there. I'm great at programming with Synon 2e, or is it just 2e now, but not much else.

But I digress from beans. I like your list. You should take one more from the P-List or Network for an even 8 (I counted 7, now it is 6. I'm old :oldand we need strikeout text font!), then you can get 4 freebees from the A - Z list, if you are so inclined, if I'm reading that Network page correctly. How are bean seeds mailed to Canada, by the way?

Ha, it certainly looked like it was heading that way. I had no idea there was so much overlap between Linux users and gardeners/bean-lovers! Wonder if there's a meaningful correlation there.

I'm great at programming with Synon 2e, or is it just 2e now, but not much else.
That is some veteran skill -- I had to look up Synon; seems like it's a programming environment for AS/400 machines? I'm still wet-behind-the-ears, having cut my teeth on PHP and JavaScript and moving on to more mature languages like C#.

Ha ha, sorry to throw you -- there were seven but then I decided against lima beans. I think nine varieties are plenty for me; that's about my limit each year, so now I'm facing the prospect of not growing out my regulars!😬

How are bean seeds mailed to Canada, by the way?
not sure; guess we'll find out! From reading this thread, it seems that the rules are less strict going into Canada than going back into the US -- maybe because many Canadian farmers buy from Johnny's, Territorial, and other US seed houses?

So what changed? I hope I never reach the point where my gardening stops challenging the arbitrary limitations imposed by geology & meteorology (or my physiology, for that matter). Those tropical vegetables aren't going to adapt themselves, you know. Nor will my mind adapt, unless I keep pushing the envelope. That's especially important for those of us who are well seasoned. ;)
 True! Here I am in what presently feels like the Arctic Circle, and yet I managed to get a crop of both okra and sesame seeds this summer! Always push the 'limits'!!

The beast Piekny Jas - 8 plants gave me over 6 lbs. Hard to get perspective, but it's sorta representative.

...
  • From the network
    • Blue speckled tepary
    • Mbombo Green
    • Meerbarbe, Nona Agnes, or September Blue -- anyone know which one comes out most 'blue'?

Sacre Bleu, by far is the best blue you will ever see (IMO : ) ). i'm just sad that it isn't a bush bean and also it wasn't stable for me when i grew it out two years from the sample that was given to me. @Bluejay77 has grown this bean successfully. :)

Nona Agnes is a darker blue, but still ok but not all beans will be blue. i have no experience with September Blue.

well, happy to oblige then :) I think I'm going to go with...

  • From the priority list
    • Cranberry Flieder (how could I resist a purple horticultural bean?)
    • Dean Family Greasy Cutshort
    • P-town
  • From the network
    • Blue speckled tepary
    • Mbombo Green
    • Meerbarbe, Nona Agnes, or September Blue -- anyone know which one comes out most 'blue'?
  • From the seeds for sale
    • Bird Egg Blue
    • Fort Portal Jade
    • Blue Jay
How about you?
That looks like a nice selection!

I've chosen from the network:
- Marfax
- Swedish Brown
- Walcherse Bruine Kogel

This is my historic brown bean phase. 😎 I'm especially interested in brown beans associated with Dutch, Swedish, and Norwegian immigrants. I've also purchased some other brown beans, but I'm not sure which will be planted this year (as there are some other interests that have developed, such as the "which broad banded type of yellow eye would I like best" phase, and an "I would sure like to grow pinto beans here" phase 🤣). To those ends, I purchased from Russell:

- Beka Brown (which I have on good authority from a Canadian source, "makes the best baked beans [she's] ever had!")
- Ga Ga Hut
- Molasses Face
- Vermont Yellow Eye
- Utah Yellow Eye

I do hope we like brown beans. I'll need to learn how to make baked beans too.
