Blue Jay's 2022 Bean Show - Day 31

Victoria Brown Eyes Red And White Off Type From 2020- Bush Dry - 2022

I grew out some more of the 2020 Victoria Brown Eyes off type seed again this year. The same length of row and it produced 6 off types this year rather than 9 as it did in 2021. Some of them looked a little different. In fact I planted them in nearly the same spot in the garden plot where the 2021 grow was of this bean. The entire grow out produced 17.65 ounces of beans (500.36 gm). First photo is some of the left over 2020 off type from Victoria Brown Eyes that started all of this myriad of colors and patterns. Photos 2 through 7 are the segregations that were produced this past season. The off types of the orignal seed were not as remarkable as a group as last year. I do like numbers 2,5 and 6 in this group

White Robin- Semi Runner Dry - 2022

This is a Robert Lobitz original named bean from over 20 years ago that he released through listings in the Seed Savers Exchange yearbook. I've seen a number of beans that look just like White Robin. This years grow out produced a striking looking off type that will be grown again. Total seed from this grow out including the off type was 8.75 ounces (248 gm).

White Sun - Bush Dry - 2022

An orginal Robert Lobitz named bean that I had received from Seed Savers Exchange Heritage Farm in 2020 but had not grow yet. Large bush plants with lots of branches produced 4.5 inch green pods with about 4 seeds per pod. Seed produced from about 11 plants was 16.75 ounces (474.85 gm)

Witzenhausen Red - Pole Dry - 2022

Obtained this bean in 2019 from a grower in Willich, Germany. A different looking Witzenhausen than the
tricolored one that is shown on my website. This is the other bean I grew this year that I could easily mistake for Slovenia III. Can't tell the two apart by looking at their seed. Not all seed planted of this one germinated so I didn't keep a record of how many plants I actually had but it produced a healthy 8.70 ounces of beans (243.64 gm)

What is the situation with Early Warwick, @Bluejay77 ? Is this all you have left for this bean?
There is still a good amount of seed of this bean. I picked good seed from this years grow out to grow again next year. I also have two backup packets of small seed from 2022 in the freezer with 27 beans in each packet. I have a 2017 backup packet of normal sized seed and a 2018 backup packet of normal sized seed of this bean in the freezer. This years grow out of this bean really surprised me that it grew so poorly while at the same time other beans in the same plot grew very well. A soil test did show that the potassium level is low and calcium is less than optimal. So that might affect some varieties. Oraganic matter is medium which is also less than optimal. I need to ammned the soil. Will see if I can bring up the mineral levels to optimal range if that will affect growth on varieties grown in that soil.

@Bluejay77 your package was mailed today - they said you should get it within 2-3days.

a few beans that failed completely i cannot try again (Baby Green Lima and Fukuryu Chunaga) as all of the seeds were planted.

these others i still have out and i will try again next season (Andikove, Montville, Shelleasy x Soldier, Striped Bunch) but i think i'll be lucky for any of these to do well enough to return 60 seeds - i hope other people have had better luck with them. :)

There are two packets of original seed of Andkiove in the freezer, 10 seeds in each packet. You contributed Montville seed in 2020 so there are 5 packets of backup of this one, 15 seeds per packet. Shelleasy x Soldier there are 4 packets of 16 seeds each in the freezer. Striped Bunch, Whatever you have left is all there is of that one.

Baby Green Lima seed was probably old. I'm not concerned about that it's probably a well kept commercial variety by a number of seed companies. Fukuryu Chunaga I wonder what happened with that one I have 6 seeds left and I will grow those out myself maybe next summer. I will presprout them before planting to make sure they are alive yet.
