Monachine - Pole, Snap, Dry. Photo Left. Monachine beans can be eaten fresh or dried. Fresh, they are stringless and yellow-green. The bean is an heirloom from Italy that was brought to the U.S. Pacific Northwest by Angelo Pellegrini, an English professor and culinary expert at the University of Washington. Pellegrini received the beans from his friend, winemaker Robert Mondavi, in the 1950s. Pellegrini named the bean "monachine," which means "little nuns" in Italian, because the white caps of the nuns resembled the beans. This years grower is from DeSoto, Wisconsin

Norridgewock - Pole Dry. Photo Right. An Abenaki heritage bean with a notable history from pre-Civil War times. Good eaten fresh and tender. The Norridgewock bean comes from an Abenaki village that was destroyed by a British attack in 1724. The bean was cultivated by European American families in the region. This years grower is from Hallowell, Maine.

Old Joe Clark - Left Photo. Also known as Pink Half-Runner and Red Peanut Bean, Old Joe Clark is an heirloom bean that produces early crops of 3 to 4-inch pods that mature from green to a unique fuchsia color. Traditionally used as a snap bean with a unique, somewhat nutty flavor as well as a dry bean when left on the vine to mature. Semi-runner plants will grow to four feet if given support. This years grower is from Freiburg, Germany.

Old Time Golden Stick - Appalachian heirloom that produces very early yields of beautiful pink pods. Semi Runner. Productive plants. Early maturity. Old variety, short fat pod with golden tan colored seed. This years grower is from Mason, Michigan.

Karachaganak - Semi Runner Dry. Left photo. This bean was stablized and named by Jerry Maddox who now lives in Louisiana. It was one of 7 segregations from one of the 52 packets of outcrossed beans that I got from Will Bonsall in 2015. I sent out about half the outcrossed packets to other people to grow and name in 2016. This years grower is from De Soto, Wisconsin.

According to Russ's information, the parent bean several generations back for Karachaganak was Norridgewock. Interesting they were both grown the same year. Same basic pattern but a different shape. Karachaganak is a Semi Runner, Norridgewock a pole.

Does @Decoy1 have a seed business? In the UK? Always looking for new seed suppliers to support.

Pea Bean Turkey - Pole Dry. This bean might be the one that has been grown in England for over 400 years. That's maybe I don't know for sure. Obainted it from a grower in Catasaugua, Pennsylvania in 2017. This bean has many look-a-likes. This is the most grown of the Network beans. This years grower is from Auburn, Indiana.

Peck To The Hill - Pole. I don't know the useage of this bean. It is an Appalachian variety and a 200 year old heirloom having been brought to Kentucky from North Carolina in the early 1800's. This bean was given to me at a seed swap in 2017. The grower was from Cynthiana Kentucky. This years grower is from Lily, Kentucky.
