My ducks ate their leaves and then they died. It has gotten a bit too hot to plant anything now. I will have to wait till August and hopefully get a summer crop.
I guess I've gotten lucky. My ducks walk right by one of the watermelon patches on their way to the pond and dont ever pay the watermelon vines any attention. Yes, Its very hot right now. Well, good luck on that summer crop.

Texan,
How exactly are you growing your watermelons? Are you growing one per plant? Do you pinch off extras?
Thanks

I am just letting them go. This is my first year. I planted 2 patches. One I planted in a soil mix with well composted horse manure and the other I planted in 100% well composted horse manure. Believe it or not the 100% well composted horse manure patch is doing far better. The weird thing is that for the first 6 weeks, the plants did far worse than the soil/horse manure mix. After that first 6 weeks the 100% horse manure patch just took off. I water each for 30 minutes every morning. Both get full sun. I do not pinch any thing off. I dont even understand why one would do that unless they were trying to get a particular watermelon to grow larger. Please keep in mind though that this is my first season to grow anything at all and I dont know squat about growing. I am learning from yall every day.

Why would one pinch off fruit? Did I answer your questions? If not please let me know so that I can.

I was told if you have a super long southern season, it is not worth pinching the extra fruit off the plant if they have plenty of time to ripen. I think that's a northern or shorter growing season thing!? I hope so... I wasn't planning on pinching mine either?!

Thanks, Texan.
I was under the impression to pinch off all but one per vine. But then I have no common sense and this must have been a norther thing.
So thanks vfem.
