Friend of the family had them. ROYAL pain in the rear. Had to put up extra fencing, ate a ton, and were not the most well tempered creatures either. She said it was not worth the investment. I've had ostrich meat. SUPER lean, very tasty, but again the costs overwhelm the cost benefit. Same problem with bison, and even beefalo just costs too much to get started or the markets too small for it to be worthwhile.

We used to have a neighbor that had a pair, back when they were the trendy thing to have, and they are incredibly dumb. She had real nice white rail pasture fences with a hot wire along the top rail to keep the horses from chewing the wood. The emus were in a pasture adjacent to the horses and kept getting shocked when they put their heads over the fence. My friend called our mutual horse vet and asked him what she should do about the silly things getting shocked. He told her to call him immediately when it happened again and he would bring the barbeque sauce! I loved that vet!
