You can use your runners as long as the mother plants aren't diseased. The only difference is that the plants you'll buy from most nurseries are certified disease free. Any large, lush mother plant that is producing well is most likely ok. I like to let my runners get a good start on their roots before I cut them loose. For the sake of the mother plant, pinch off all runners except 3 or 4 (everbearers particularly.) The junebearers are nuts about making runners and it's not humanly possible to keep up with them (commercial ops use junebearers, one large crop all at once.) On those till under the old plants and keep a thin row of the new runners for next year.

The worst buggies I have to deal with are spit bugs and slugs on mine. I've not seen any aphids either, but can't say that's not a possibility.

Just curious, what variety did you get?

Aroma and Valley sunset. I wanted some everbearers, but was to late. Hopefully get some of those next year.
