@Kassaundra, the end with the letters: is that a hole in the center? Can you see if it has threads for a screw? If so, I like @Chickie'sMomaInNH 's idea. It would have a washer that fits on the outside of the cage, with a sturdy screw holding it on.

No screw holes are there.

Isn't it interesting how we can find things in places we would never expect. It almost never fails that when I think that I'm the first person to ever stand in a long-lost place, when I'm hunting in the wilds, that I quickly spy an old Budweiser beer can.

My DH also said the metallic "stuff" may be there to make the logs glow when they get hot, like embers.
